Two Variables

by Hillary on June 24, 2010

I have been wanting to make a Chocolate Cherry Bomb for… months! I don’t really know what was stopping me – I think it was the ridiculous price of cherries. Anyhow, I finally purchased all of the ingredients I needed to create this adored smoothie, and today was the day I decided to give it a whirl.

Chocolate Cherry Bomb: Hillary’s Whey

  • 1 packet Tera’s Whey – fair trade dark chocolate
  • 3/4 c. organic unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • huge handful of homegrown [organic] spinach
  • 1/2 c. frozen organic cherries
  • 1 banana
  • ice

Variable 1: Unfortunately, my CCB experience was not a good one. The smoothie tasted pretty darn delicious – it was extra-thick [from the whey powder I presume], and had a subtle chocolate flavor. However, my stomach is not so happy at the moment. I would like to blame it on the packet of protein powder, as I don’t typically add ‘supplements’ to my food; perhaps, I am just unusually full from the foreign 20 grams of protein in my “Green Monster”. I didn’t realize the individual packet also came with a 110 calorie price tag. I only managed to drink half of the smoothie, as that was a hefty snack in itself!

Variable 2: Another reason for the knot in my stomach may be due to the fact that I’m in charge of the food for a 200 top wedding this weekend – gah! I know… what? I was asked to do the job less than two weeks ago – ummm, crazy? I told the bride many times that I work for a caterer, but am not a professional myself. We’ll see how this goes. Wish me luck!

Alrighty, folks. I’m going to go be a vegetable on the couch and watch SYTYCD.

Peace Out,

Hillary

Next time use half the packet and some cocoa powder?

Also, Costco has some great frozen finger food that tastes great! I would definitely get some boxes of that so you don’t have to make EVERYTHING yourself. Think mini quiche :)

Thanks, Allie. Actually, I did not design the menu, nor do I have to purchase any of the food. I wish you were here to help!

Whey doesn’t agree with my stomach, either! I get terrible stomach pains, which makes me think I am lactose intolerant, but I don’t want to face that reality, lol.

I can’t do the whey protein thing ’cause of stomach issues and ’cause it is an animal product. I think the other milder vegetable based proteins are better for stomach problems, but I still don’t use them very often. Allie’s suggestion is a good one about half cocoa powder and half protein powder. I know the packets have a lot, but it doesn’t mean you need it all!

Good luck with the event…I am sure you can get some help!

Ack, that’s too bad about the smoothie. I’ve had stomach probs drinking smoothies sometimes too… strange. Often I find it’s when I have smoothies loaded with a lot of SPINACH though. I have no idea if there’s any way that could be a culprit but I’ve just noticed it before. I’ve been wanting to get around to trying the cherry bomb but same deal with the cherries, pricey. And I can never find frozen ones, guess I should just freeze my own!

Good luck with the wedding. I’m sure you’re going to do a fabulous job. I also have problems with whey protein. Have you ever tried Amazing Meal? I like a tablespoon of their chocolate flavor in my smoothies, but that’s about all I can do.

Oh my gosh! That sounds really scary, but I’m sure you’ll be really happy/proud of yourself once it’s over. Can’t wait to hear how it goes, good luck!

Hey there! I just came across your blog and I love it! Everything looks so tasty and delicious. I just recently started making whey shakes/drinks and do experience some stomach issues as well. I’m going to see if maybe it will go away with time… we’ll see. Good luck with your catering, I’m sure it will go great. I will add you to my blogroll and I look forward to checking in :)

Good luck at the wedding this weekend! And I tried a choco cherry smoothie today too and it didn’t go so well. Let me know if you find any ways to improve it, because it has so much potential!
