Let’s just say today could not have been a more perfect Sunday at home with my family. After breakfast I headed out to Redwood Roots Farm with my aunt and stomped around through the muddy crops, filling our bucket with whatever vegetables our hearts desired. With more lettuces and leafy greens than a turtle could dream of, we said goodbye to the farm cats and meandered down the street to an indie craft fair, bustling with Humboldt hippies.
I met up with my mom, and after a little grocery shopping, we came home and I made a latte with Pumpkin Spice soy milk, a seasonal Silk flavor. Thick foam and cinnamon on top…yum yum.
I picked some apples from the tree outside with the nifty fruit picker and then got to work in the kitchen making Butternut Harvest Loaves (see recipe page). The loaves are bursting with homemade butternut squash puree, pumpkin seeds, walnuts and pecans. I am so anxious to toast a piece in the morning.
Hmmm…I wonder what’s for dinner? More squash of course! My mom made a gorgeous savory galette with roasted butternut squash, chard, shallots, garlic and sage, and a sprinkling of fresh parmesan. My dad made a very colorful salad to go alongside. There were magnificent aromas coming from the oven all afternoon.
Morning run with friends, veggie harvesting, craft fair, apple picking, bread baking, dinner with the parents…I couldn’t have imagined a better way to spend the day.
Night,
~ Hillary

I have never been out to Redwood roots Farm. How does that work?
Shannon — it’s a CSA Farm…Community Supported Agriculture. Redwood Roots has about 150 shareholders(fixed fee). Over the winter those shareholders are allowed to “u-pick”. Then during the summer we get a share of our “farmer’s” harvest. Next summer, will be very different, as Farmer Janet is going to have a “farm stand”…which means more of will be able to enjoy her fine local food. Can you tell I am a fan?
Sounds like a perfect day :)
Congrats on five years :) I’d love to see more workouts on your blog, ideally those that can be done on the go with just body weight!
What I enjoy most about this blog is how inspiring you are! You definitely seem to understand balance. Many other healthy foodie bloggers eat kale with wheatgrass and acai ;) but all of your meals and indulgences and workouts are so realistic and attainable and healthy and I love it!
I love your blog, and what I love most is how honest you are with us about your life, your goals, and the journey to achieve these. I can relate with you on many things, but also find your entrepreneurship and dedication very admirable! Specifically, I love the workouts you share with us – super helpful!
I love how you’ve shared your story – how far you’ve come in your healthy eating and exercise journey. I would love to see more tidbits along the way!
I love the workout wrap-ups and the poster workouts. They’re nice to print out and bring to the gym (or my basement) with me!
I love how real and honest you are!
Things I love are the date posts, day in the life, and literally just everything you blog about. Do not change! You are fabulous! Congrats on 5 years!!! :)
I would love to see more “poster” workouts that you either create or do!
My favorite part about your blog is the workouts and recipes! You always have really tough workouts that I save and do myself at a later date. Thank you for the inspiration!
I love how REAL your blog is! Everything in moderation. Inspiring.
I love that this blog is a down-to-earth perspective on fitness and your life. Also, it is a good source of health information! Ok…so that’s TWO things I like about this blog. :)
Hillary, I am so thankful that I’ve found your blog and I check in almost every day excited to see what new things you have to share with us! I think even more than your delicious recipes and kick-butt workouts, my favorite part of your blog is getting to learn about your food/life/health philosophy. Your focus on intuitive eating is really inspiring for me, because I hope to someday also let go of food stress. Keep sending out those positive vibes :)
My favorite posts are the hiking and adventure posts, like Yosemite!
I haven’t been following your blog for very long but I knew once I found it I was going to be inspired. I love everything about your blog! I would love to see more of your daily life posts and lots more nutrition related stuff such as your thoughts on recent nutrition studies, fat diets, etc. Happy 5 years and here’s to 5 more! Keep up the good work!
I just found your blog a few weeks ago, but I’ve enjoyed the posts I’ve read so far! I like to read about intuitive eating, daily eats, workouts, and your overall realistic/positive view of health!
Keep blogging!
Congratulations on the anniversary. As a new follower of the blog, love seeing your posts and look forward to more!
What I’ve loved about this blog since I started reading it 2 years ago was that you’re not afraid to say that you’re not perfect – you’re allowing your followers to see a journey to holistic health, whether it be talking about your frustrating relationship with the scale (which I ended as well) to your intuitive eating patterns. It makes healthy living possible for everybody when you say to make diet and fitness personal – you work out when you feel like it, when you treat healthy eating and fitness as a gift to your body, not a punishment.
I love your recipes! I would love to see more highlights of your days and weekends- those are my favs!
Hi Hillary, I enjoy reading about your nutritional insights! Also, I like when you’re candid and share how balance is hard to acheive sometimes – no one’s perfect, but by reading blogs you would think people are! Thanks for keeping it real.
I love your recipes and your workouts. Your posts are always great!
I actually just discovered your blog last week, I was trying to find more blogs similar to Tina’s at Carrots ‘N’ Cake. So far I love yours as well and can’t wait to follow along and get to know you better. I love new healthy recipes. ;)
I love all the great nutritional information you post! You contribute on so many different parts of wellness and I really like that. I always feel like I can trust what you post! Congrats on turning 5! I look forward to many more posts and insights!
I love your recipes and awesome workouts! Happy anniversary!
I love your creative, seasonal recipes that I keep returning to year after year for inspiration!
I love your vulnerability and positivity. You are and have been a particular help to me, a college nutrition major, on the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. It’s like you’re my big sister, setting the example and giving me the opportunity to follow in your footsteps. You have a way of inspiring Miss Hillary ;). Keep it up!
Congrats on 5 years! I love the image with the balloons you made for your anniversary. I really enjoy the healthy recipes and the recaps of workouts you do whether they are yours or others’ you’re following. I also love seeing your beautiful hiking adventuring photos. Cheers!
I enjoy the great workouts and yummy smoothie recipes. Keep ’em comin’ :)

I love how it’s changed as you have changed, because that is what life is all about! And I love seeing how you make every phase of life a healthy one.
Happy 5 Years! I enjoy your workout recaps and ideas because I, too, like a variation of workouts to enjoy throughout my week to target different areas. I would like to see more recipes. :)
I love your honesty and openness. You give your posts in a straight-forward and fun-to-read way. As a college student also interested in nutrition and probably/maybe pursuing a career in health, it is awesome to hear a genuine point of view.
Thanks, Grace!
I love your recipes and how you show us how to balance it all. Thanks for your wonderful posts. I just started reading your blog, but I am looking forward to the next 5 years.
It’s a toss up between recipes and workouts. I love them both. Keep them coming please! Congratulations!
