My Running Shoe Relationship

July 1, 2010 by Hillary 24 Comments

Hi. Happy JULY!? Wait… June, where are you going? Don’t leave me. Oh, alright. Time to move on to a new month and new shoes!

021

I got new running shoes for my birthday…. the only thing was that I had to wait two weeks until they arrived. I literally went to the local running outfitter every other day, checking to see if they had made their way in on that day’s shipment. It was as if I was a six year old, waiting for Christmas.

Alas, I got the call yesterday. My special-ordered Asics GT-2150’s – size 6.5 – were here!

My camera had quite the crush on these hotties.

Alright, seriously… running shoes. Once I was asked, “What’s one item you wouldn’t want to live without?”. My response: “my running shoes”. Without getting all metaphorical and sentimental on you now, my running shoes are – without a doubt – my favorite pair(s) of shoes in my closet.

Since my junior year of high school [when my serious love affair with running began], I’ve had 6 pairs of real running shoes – ALL Asics. I started with the Cumulus model, and since retiring that pair, I’ve been wearing the GT-2100 series. I’d say we have a pretty strong relationship after 5 years pairs.

I’ve heard the rule of thumb is to buy a new pair of running shoes every 500 miles. I believe this to be a reasonable statement, yet I don’t think I’ve been following the rules:

2130’s #2 [left]: December 2008.

2140’s [middle]: June 2009.

2150’s [right]: June 2010.

015

010

I easily run more than 500 miles a year. Look at that wear…

008

… and tear! I over-pronate. Can’t ya tell?

The GT-2100 series is a structured cushioning shoe, designed for over-pronation. Perhaps this is we make a great match. I can’t imagine dating wearing anything else.

My 2150’s will run with me throughout my training for my 3rd half-marathon [October 17, 2010]. Ah, what a coincidence… my Nike Women’s race shoes are pink ; )

Speaking of my up-coming race, I created a NEW PAGE for my marathon training plan which officially begins July 17th. Stay tuned for my exact training schedule & race details…

It’s almost time for the SYTYCD results show. I hope ya’ll have a relaxing holiday weekend!

I have had success with Asics, but I recently switched over to a pair of Brooks that just mold to my feet! They’re heavenly… I have really narrow feet, and they fit them just perfectly while helping out my severe pronation tendency. I try to replace them every 3-4 months…

Those shoes are so cute – I love the pink! I have a pair of Saucony now. I got them at a running shoe store where they help you pick out the shoe to be sure it fits your foot, running style, etc. – what a fun experience! Enjoy the new shoes!

I’m a bum when it comes to that 500 miles rule. Running shoes are pretty expensive so I try to keep them as long as my feet don’t hurt. I had to buy a new pair this spring after two years of running. Now that I’m training for my first half-marathon, I’ll probably have to buy a new pair at the end of summer though. Bah, it’s worth the cost! :)

    Love the new shoes!

I am currently in Mizunos for the first time. Love ’em!

I will probably replace these ladies before my 1/2 marathon. I think my aim is 2 pairs of shoes a year (every 6 months), soI think that puts me around the 500 mile mark.

As a new runner, I specifically bought my latest pair of shoes just for running. They are the “Equipments” from Adidas. I realllly like them and they are serving me well. I’ll let you know if I do the 500 miles thing — as of current, I usually just get a new pair when the other pair starts to get too torn up — most of my wear and tear used to be from volleyball, so I think it took longer to wear out!

I LOVE Asics too! I actually wear the GT-2100 series too! I have a problem with overpronation as well. I dig holes in my shoes in a pretty similar spot! Funny.
I like that you keep all your shoes. They all look nice together lined up, all different colors, haha : )

Oh no, I think your date might be cheating on you because I date Asics too! LOL, I am definitely a loyal Asics lover too – haven’t run in anything else in the past 5 years! I’m an over-pronator as well so most of the models I buy have the extra support in them. Your new ones are so so so cute, I’m incredibly jealous!

I used to get Asics all the time too! But one time, they guy had me try on Saucony and I haven’t switched back since. Have you tried any of their pairs on before? It’s a really similar fit. I seriously over pronate too :(

Love those pink babies! I recently had to break up with my Asics because they just weren’t lasting long enough for me. I love the cushion in them, but would only get about 4 months out of them before my knees really started to hurt. I now run in Mizunos and love the wave plate in them. I also have a pair of Brooks that I alternate with. I’m still trying to find the model that I’ll stick with.

I’m an Asics girl myself. I pretty much only buy Asics for my running shoes, they are just awesome, and I’ve never really had any problems with them! I usually buy new ones every 6 months or so, or when I feel like I need to (or if I see a nice pair in the store… hahaha :) )

    Hillary,

We need to run together over in my neck of the woods, and your shoes will not be that white!! Mine last for 300 – 500 miles, depending on the time of year. I find that helps prevent injuries: shin splints, achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis. I wear Mizunos. I have been told that alternating shoes each day is best, as it takes 48 hours for a pair to “recover” from your run , just like we need time to recover. I think that works! I try to always have 2 pairs on hand. Right now, one pair smells like SKUNK as my 3 dogs got sprayed this morning on my run! UGH! I also saw a snake and a scorpion! Yesterday, I was in Arcata picking up my son from BB camp at HSU, so I got to run on your lovely beach. I could’ve run forever!

I try to alternate between my shoes, too. Plus, you always need a couple pairs so you have one that matches your outfit ; )

First of all, sorry for commenting on a million posts this morning. ;) haha

Anyway, I LOVE these shoes. I actually just ordered a new pair of 2150’s and tried to get them in pink but they were unfortunately back-ordered. I really needed a new pair and so I didn’t want to wait. But the pink ones are so cute! I’ve been running in this series forever — since before it was in the 20s. I think once you find the type of shoe that works for you, you have to stick with it. Good luck with the start of marathon training!

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
