Early Bird Special

August 11, 2010 by Hillary 21 Comments

Caution: sleepless blogger on board. May result in frequent grammar errors and confused thoughts.

Yes, it’s true. It’s only 6:30am, I’ve already eaten breakfast, and am about ready to hit up the gym. This is what happens when your body is trapped in a 80* hot box all night with a growling tummy, achy back, and busy mind running through its six-paged to-do list. Worst night of sleep… ever!

I have no idea how much sleeping actually occurred last night, but it wasn’t enough. I was tossing and turning constantly just wanting it to be morning… so I could eat! At 6:00am, I was fed up with trying to sleep, and bounced into the kitchen to throw together a cold bowl of cereal. I have a feeling the cold cereal cravings are going to last a while longer [especially now that I’m stocked with granola].

005

  • 2/3 c. Oaty Bites
  • 1/3 c. homemade granola
  • 1/3 c. Humboldt b-berries
  • 2/3 c. 2% milk

Here’s how the granola making went down Monday:

  • 12 c. organic rolled oats – I scored a sale @ $0.79/lb!
  • 2 c. chopped walnuts
  • 2 c. pumpkin seeds
  • 1 c. sunflower seeds
  • 1 c. unsweetened coconut
  • 1/2 c. ground flax
  • 1 T cinnamon

  • 1 c. canola oil
  • 1/2 c. agave
  • 1/4 c. honey
  • 2 T vanilla

Mix together dry ingredients in a very large bowl. Mix together wet ingredients in a small bowl. Pour wet over dry. Mix thoroughly. Spread evenly into glass baking dishes or rimmed baking sheets. Bake @ 350* for 28-30 minutes, stirring every 10. Remove from oven and immediately spread granola out on paper towels to cool quickly. When completely dry, store in an airtight container.

Wish me luck getting through my monster to-do list today. I have a good feeling a nap and iced coffee will be needed to succeed.

Happy Humpity Hump Day!

Hillary

Are you an early riser/morning person? I loveee the morning; it’s my favorite part of the day. I am glad I’m getting a early start today… just wish I had gotten in a few more quality zzz’s.

I LOVE getting up early in the morning. I always feel so motivated, and it’s great knowing you have the whole day ahead of you. Good luck getting everything done today – and enjoy the nap if you take one! :)

I am a morning person as long as I get enough sleep!
Try and call it an early night!

I’m kind of in the middle…I like to get up somewhat early (8ish) as long as I’ve gotten enough sleep, but I just moved into a new apartment and the past couple of weeks, I have not been able to get to sleep! The heat combined with a noisy fan and a new bed (and bedroom, for that matter) has had me tossing and turning all night, so I definitely feel you! Iced coffee for all!

I am not a huge morning person. I’m fine once I’m up and moving, it’s the getting up and moving part that tends to be a problem! I’m usually up by 6:30ish to get ready and get to work by 8.

I was never a morning person until I got married. I was always known for sleeping in late, but then we got a puppy and house training her meant waking up every 4 hours to take her to the bathroom outside – haha. So, with that, and then having my favorite gym classes in the morning, you could say I have changed. However, I don’t wake up before 7 or anything. Which I really want to start doing so I can get more things done earlier.

I’m a morning person, too! But I really function best on 8 hours of sleep. I can manage on 7, but anything less and it’s hard for me to be productive or make complete sentences. :)

I’m so sorry you didn’t sleep well!!! I hope last night was better for you! I’m not a great morning person…I need at least ten minutes before anyone can speak to me and can function!

I’m trying to be more of a morning person. I’ve always been a night-owl (thanks, Dad) but I think you get so much more accomplished in the mornings. More daylight = a happy Maura!

I am a morning person…but a night person…LOL! Bahhh. I know I need to get to bed earlier, even when I’m TIRED, but I won’t go – I think living alone makes it tough for me to relax at night. But, it killlls me in the morning…

I’m not much of a morning person at all – so I’m super jealous of you :)
Your granola sounds delicious! I’ve always wanted to try making my own – I’m sure it would taste so great when it is all warm after being baked.

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
