Anxiously Bored

August 21, 2010 by Hillary 9 Comments

Why, hello there! Hope y’all  are enjoying your Saturday. Things are pretty much back to normal for me. I’m finally feeling about 82% better – the antibiotics are doing their job – and I’m through with my recap of my priceless trip to Chicago. I hope you didn’t miss the three epic posts.

Part I: Yum Yum

Part II: A Taste of Chi Town

Part III: In Good Spirits

Part IV: Beautiful People. Beautiful Food.

Part V: Pinch Me

Part VI: A Hidden Gem

Part VII: Pizza My Heart

Part VIII: Walk. Eat. Repeat.

Part IX: Trains to Planes

With school just a day away, I set my alarm fairly early so I could get a jump start on my day. I love the peacefulness in the morning while my roommates are still sound asleep. I enjoy having the house to ‘myself’ while I prepare breakfast… maybe I’m just greedy. My mom has always treasured quiet mornings. They say you become more and more like your parents every day ; )

Though my cupboards are stocked with my favorite steel cut oats, its too hot to be turning on the stove these days. Simple does it with Trader Joe’s Quinoa Wheat Toast, Trader’s Joes super cheap crunchy p.nut buttah, and a sliced banana… also from TJ’s.

005

Enjoyed on one of my uber-cute birthday plates.

006

Iced Giada Espresso Roast drip coffee + 1% milk. It was a Carrots ‘N’ Cake kind of morning. After a bit of  blog reading, I headed to the famers’ market downtown.

Lots of peaches and tomatoes [that’s the heat!], blackberries and strawberries, eggs, almonds, and honey amongst the colorful stalls. I found some salad greens, though it wasn’t easy. The selection here is vastly different than our market at home.

013

Fire Zinnias.

017

Peppers.

014

Tickle your fancy with tomatoes.

After a double loop around the venders, I headed to The Resort. I’m anxious to get back to training!

  • 1 mi. run around indoor track  [8:55]
  • 30-minute spin [10.5 mi.]
  • 20-minute treadmill

2 min. @ 6.6mph, 2 min. @ 6.8mph, 1 min. @ 8.0mph – 1.0 incline [repeat 2x]

10 minute @ 4.0mph – 2.0 incline

I finished my workout with a variety of strength exercises from squats and lunges to biceps and triceps. I love having all the equipment to play on again : )

Then showers were taken, wardrobes were washed, eats were eaten, and errands were executed.

Q: Would you rather a) spend $2 on 4 non-organic store-bought peaches or b) spend $3 on 2 organic local market peaches?

If you’re still thinking about the oxymoron of the title, I’ll explain… I’ve been a bit bored since I’ve returned from Chicago, as I’ve been keeping my activity level to a minimum to allow my body to heal. Though I’ve been physically ‘bored’, my mind is anxious about the start of the new semester which is less than 48 hours away. Thank you Type A personality for constantly makes lists inside my head: wrap-up internship, print syllabi, buy school supplies, yada yada yada. Perhaps things will be better in a week or so when my Type A life is scheduled day to day in my new lime green planner.

Keep cool, friends!

xo Hillary

I always buy cheaper non-organic peaches. I know I should buy organic with thin-skinned produce like peaches but there’s such a big price different between the two. I just wash it really well before eating.

Good luck on starting your classes!

Well, for an extra dollar, I would definitely go with the locally grown peaches. That is a no brainer!

Good luck to you! I am sure once you start classes, you will be wishing to be bored again!

Sorry you’re feeling anxiously bored. Hopefully you can get back to training soon! And once classes start up again, I’m sure things will be a lot better. For me, the anticipation of the thing is usually much worse than the thing itself.

Even though I try to shop as cheaply as possible, I’d rather spend more money on the organic local peaches. I think this is a case where the extra cost is worth it.

Hey! I just found your blog and I love it! I am a college student too! I’m similar to you in the mornings, I love getting up early when my roomies are still asleep and I can make some coffee and breakfast and just be quiet. It’s so nice. I also like running errands in the morning. The farmers’ market is my favorite place! Great pics there! Check out my blog sometime at Sweets and Veggies :)

I completely know how you feel! I am COMPLETELY Type A and am starting to get the same back-to-school itch! This made me excited to get back to school and enjoy the quiet early mornings in my apartment :)

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
