Hump Day Handstands

September 29, 2010 by Hillary 11 Comments

I’m sort of embarrassed by the photographs you are about to see – the quality, not the content. I have no shame in the contents of my tasty breakfast and lunch… no shame at all.

FOOD.

Today was a winning Waffle Wednesday. I created this ‘recipe’ in my head before getting into bed last night. It made rolling out of bed @ 6:00am so much easier.

009
Nutty Pumpkin Wafflewich
  • 2 Van’s multigrain light toaster waffles
  • smear of TJ’s flax almond butter on each waffle
  • 2-3 T organic pumpkin mixed with agave & cinnamon
  • 1/2 ripe banana, sliced

007

Loved all the different components to this wafflewich. What would you add?

Lunch was almost an exact duplicate of yesterday. Why mess with a good thing?

012

  • 1/2 sprouted wheat tortilla
  • smear of homemade pesto – all gone!
  • 1 Dr. Praeger’s Cali Burger – love the crispy edges
  • fresh romaine & red onion

010

… with a side of lemon H20 in a mason for hydration.

RUNNING WEDNESDAY WORKOUT.

Now that there is NO more WRECPump the rest of the semester [tear], I have to reschedule my Monday/Wednesday exercise regimen. My body was sending me some signals last night after two days of fast running, so I promised I would treat it with a 75-minute yoga class tonight. For some reason, it’s always hard to get myself to go to yoga classes [especially if they cost $$$]. I don’t get the same cravings for yoga as I do for cardio; however, throughout the day today, I imagined myself at the gym doing yoga… not circling the indoor track again and again. Set your mind to something, and you can do it! It’s all mental, all mental. The class was challenging and fun [hello handstands!]. Almost every time I leave a class, I wonder why I don’t make myself practice it more often. I get such a different feeling from yoga than I do from running… but it is a wonderful feel, a feeling of zen. It’s a good possibility yoga may become the new BodyPump :)

Are you a yoga-goer? How often do you practice? Do you have a favorite type of yoga?

Oh… I guess I should mention I did run 1 mile around the indoor track afterwards. Sorry, I just can’t help myself!

* * *

We’re over the hump! I must minimize my to-do list before Friday because I have a special guest visiting for the weekend :)

See ya!

Hillary

Why are you embarassed about those pics? They were absolutely gorgeous! I loved how you drank your water from a mason jar – too cute.

My body rarely craves yoga either – I pretty much force myself to do it.

I’m not a huge yoga person. It’s just too mellow for me!

Love the waffle breakfast. Yummyyyy. My favorite type of yoga is vinyasa power yoga. It keeps you constantly moving, so you really get a good workout and sweat it out a lot.

I usually do yoga like once a week! I love it so much because I feel tons better after I do it. I been so busy lately, so the hour of yoga really helps calm me down.

I’m a huge yoga fan. I don’t do it often enough, mostly because the classes I like tend to be the ones that cost $$! I’m pretty picky about it, I tend to go for Flow Yoga more than anything (I’d rather repeat repeat repeat than struggle to hold a position for forever with a body that’s not made for bending). I like it when teachers know how to keep the rhythm of the practice and flow smoothly from one type (strength, conditioning, etc.) to another (balance, rest, etc.) without disrupting the zen of the practice.

I also love Om Shala here in Arcata (next to HumBrews on 10th). They have a Groove Yoga that’s awesome…you should check it out next time you’re around.

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
