Time to Taper

October 11, 2010 by Hillary 15 Comments

Happy Monday!

Catching up on weekend posts?
  • I finished my 12th week of training with 100+ minutes of outdoor running.
  • I made a batch of vegan pumpkin pecan bars… that are disappearing before my eyes.
  • I lived my life.

College.

Now, moving on… today begins the 8th week of the semester. You know what that means!? When Friday finally rolls around, I will be more than halfway done with another semester of college – yesss. It also means that we’ve entered mid-semester madness. I knew signing up for a half-marathon in the middle of October was a crazy idea, but I did, and now I’m ‘paying’ for it. I have THREE exams this week in my hardest classes… of course I do. Life likes to make us scatter brained – literally! – from time to time. I’m not sure how in the world my brain will be able to absorb 4 chapters of food science + 4 chapters of physiology + the details of carbohydrate and lipid digestion/absorption, but it will have to try.

I am choosing to take my nutrition exam early [scheduled for Monday], so I can enjoy every moment of my special weekend without worrying about icky tests. Smart idea? Would you do the same?

Nutrition.

Since I’m swamped with exams this week, I thought it would only be fair for ya’ll to take a quiz ;)

Let’s talk lipids.

  1. What is the DRI [Dietary Reference Intake] of cholesterol?
  2. list the fat-soluble vitamins.
  3. True or False. Omega-6 is an anti-inflammatory.

Running.

Thankfully I’m tapering this week, so I don’t have the added stress of trying to fit in time to run a couple dozen miles. However, I’m still planning to get in a bit of daily movement at the WREC each day. Exercise = my stress reliever! I don’t have a set plan for my week of workouts, except for a yoga class Wednesday evening. I’m allowing my body to decide on this one, while aiming for at least 15 miles of running before race day.

Well, life is calling… must keep calm & carry on.

Take care,

Hillary

    1. 300 mg/day? I should know this since I have high cholesterol! (I used Google – is that cheating?)
    2. A, D, E, K (I learned this in my AFAA group ex course, but not sure if I’m remembering correctly!)

I ran a half marathon both junior and senior year of college in October – and in many ways (kind of like you were saying) it was my savior. I needed the 30 – hour 40 minutes of exercise to clear my mind from the stress of exams, and it totally helped me prioritize and organize my schedule. Not to mention – not goof off in the time I had reserved for studying! Good luck this week :)

YES, it’s a brilliant idea that you’re taking your test earlier. I did that once in school; plus when you’re done and everyone else is still cramming, it feels kinda nice :)

I’m excited for Nike Women’s this weekend. We’re still working on a time for a meet-up, let me know if you have any input as for what time on Sat. or where :)

I totally feel you on the college front. It always seems that everything “happens” at once. I’ll be thinking of you as I’m working on school assignments. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Good luck and remember to breathe :)

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
