The Holiday Hustle Challenge

December 7, 2010 by Hillary 15 Comments

Here’s the deal…

I’ve been in an exercise rut lately since running my 3rd half-marathon.

I’ve been in a blogging rut lately.

& I have zero holiday spirit this season thus far.

So… to help myself out a little, I’ve created a healthy holiday challenge for myself to a) get me out of my exercise rut and burn off those extra holiday cookie calories, b) motivate me to blog regularly, and c) do something holiday related!

I intended to begin the challenge December 1, but that day came and went before I knew it. I realize today’s sort of a random day, but it is the first Running Tuesday of December, so let’s start this thing!

 The Holiday Hustle Challenge

I’m challenging myself to:

  • Exercise for 60+ minutes 15x.

  • Include strength training into my workout 10x.

  • Complete 25 push-ups in a row.

Simple enough, right? I will be creating a new page where you can track my daily workouts if you wish, and I will be uploading them to DailyMile, too.

Leave a comment letting me know if you decide to join in on the challenge!

Challenge runs ‘til Christmas Day 2010.

* * *

I’m already cheating by counting my workout from yesterday. Hey, at least I’m getting my butt into gear! :)

Monday

  • 50-minute treadmill run [6.14 mi.]
  • 10-minute treadmill walk [0.72 mi.]
  • 0.5 mi. indoor track run
  • arms + abs

Running Tuesday [today!]:

  • 30-minute spin [11.2 mi.]
  • 20-minute treadmill run + 15-minute treadmill walk [3.6 mi. total]
  • 0.5 mi. indoor track run
  • abs <—not including this as a strength workout

I might want to do something about my cookie consumption next. Though it’s tough when you have a fresh batch of Tina’s Salted Oatmeal Walnut Chocolate Chip Cookies in the house [more on those later!].

Cheers to a healthy holiday season!

Great challenge! I just try to keep exercising and not switch things up too much, or I’ll end up stopping.

Good luck with your exercise challenge! I’m doing a holiday rowing challenge, sponsored by Concept 2… 100,000 meters on the erg between 11/25 and 12/25. I got a late start, so have some catching up to do, but I think it’s possible – only 75,000 more to go :)
BTW – it doesn’t appear that your link to the oatmeal cookies is working.
Good luck, too, getting through the end of the semester studies. Soon you’ll be home baking, decorating, listening to holiday music and maybe sipping on some eggnog :)

Your mom is too sweet – good luck on your challenge! Right now it doesn’t seem like I’m in a “slump” – I’m just SO busy!!

I’m so busy and it’s so cold outside that running is getting harder. I have been doing a lot of yoga though. I’m doing my own yoga challenge – see how much I can do in 30 days.

This is a great challenge! I love coming up with something like this, or signing up for some sort of race, when I feel like I’m in a rut. Especially when it’s cold outside, it’s so much easier to push yourself when you have set goals. My goals are to run 5 days/week, and to do P90X workouts (the only way I can force myself to do some weight lifting) at least every other day.

I’ve been feeling very much the same way lately. Is it fair to blame mine on taking finals and working? I think it’s great that you set goals for yourself, and I hope you start feeling some of the Christmas cheer soon. I’m sure you will once you get home with your family.

What a great idea! I’ve definitely been feeling the same way (schools has been draining me of every once of motivation). My fitness goals around the holidays are typically just to keep moving (especially once I go back home to see the family). For example, go running with the dog every morning, walk with my mom around the neighborhood, do pushups before the rest of the house wakes up, invite my sister to a yoga class…things like that help you stay active while still spending time with family.
I think your challenge will definitely help you get out of the rut!

What a great challenge! I’m in the middle of my burpee blast challenge and training for my third half-marathon, plus random other workouts, so my December is jam packed. I’ll be rooting for you girl! Way to take charge. Sounds like an awesome plan :)

I find that for me, it’s a little too much pressure to subject myself to new fitness goals this time of year. I just go with the flow and try to do my usual 6 days of workouts with an equal amount of cardio and strength. And if I don’t get to the gym that much, I won’t be too hard on myself. It sounds like this challenge is going to be great, though!! Good luck, girl :)

    I love challenges! Great idea!
My goal right now is to try and build my miles back up again. I am recovering from an IT band injury and I just desperately want to run again!

That is a great challenge! This month I have challenged myself to run at least 3x a week and strength train at least 2x. So far so good!

Great idea! I’ve been following your blog for a while now & love it! I also attend CSUC, but I’m currently on a national exchange in Colorado (it’s awesome!). Good luck with this challenge & finals!

I love the idea of your Holiday Hustle Challenge! Great way to hold yourself accountable. Fortunately [and unfortunately] for me, I have winter track practice all through the holiday vacation. I guess I won’t be sleeping in! :-P

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
