I guess I’ve never had true shredded wheat cereal before because after my 65-minute run with my friends Amy & Stacy, I came home eager to eat a bowl of cereal with my new find from the co-op and fresh batch of cinnamon vanilla granola.
I thought the cereal box was oddly shaped, but I didn’t think that there would be 18 huge biscuits of 100% whole wheat inside, hehe.
A BIG bowl of cereal for a hungry runner:
-
3 biscuits
-
1/2 c. cinnamon vanilla granola
-
1/2 banana & raisins
-
1 c. unsweetened almond milk
I bought another new variety of Barbara’s yesterday – gluten free Honey Rice Puffins – that I can’t wait to try!

Before heading to Costco this afternoon with my pops, I whipped up an energizing recipe that I’ve been wanting to try.
Cashew Cacao Energy Bites
Recipe Courtesy: [never home]maker
-
1 c. steel cut oats
-
1/2 c. raw cashews
-
1/4 c. unsweetened coconut
-
1/4 c. agave syrup
-
1/4 c. cacao nibs
Put all ingredients – except the cacao nibs – in a food processor and blend. Add the nibs after a minute or two and pulse a few times. I suggest refrigerating the ‘dough’ for at least 30 minutes to make it easier to roll into round balls. Use a tablespoon to scoop out heaping amounts, roll gently, and place on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Refrigerate for a couple hours until firm.
I sampled a ball along with a half dozen dark chocolate espresso beans before hitting the super store. Costco’s greatness requires a lot of energy, didn’t you know? ;) I’m thinking a teaspoon of instant espresso powder in the next batch of balls!?
By the time we got home from a short – yet successful – trip to Costco, I was ready for lunch.
Vegan Veggie Wrap:
-
sprouted wheat tortilla
-
local hummus
-
tofu pan-fried in Garlic Gold olive oil + sea salt
-
butter lettuce & cucumber
-
drizzle local Tofu Tahini dressing
… with a crunchy carrot & lemon kombucha on the side.
The Kombucha Effect:
- naturally detoxifying & energizing
- helps strengthen immune system
- aids digestion
- regulates sugar levels and appetite

That’s all I’ve got for now. I have a long list of blog-related work I want to do while I’m free from school work, but I see homemade crab cakes and a movie in my immediate future tonight…
Have a great week!
Hill
I’ve never tried kombucha because I always hear about the fermentation and get nervous…I know, weird. Do you like its taste? Does it really help with digestion? If so, I should start drinking it!
I haven’t tried many flavors, though I’ve enjoyed the ones I have tried. It’s an acquired taste, just like fermented wine ;)
Hi Hillary! Thanks so much for your comment on my blog – I just checked out your About and Philosophy pages and I can’t wait to keep reading! I really like your food philosophy and would love to incorporate more of that into my own lifestyle.
The energy bites look awesome – I never thought to put steel cut oats in recipes because it seems like they’d make cookies so crunchy. Maybe I’ll have to try these! Have a great rest of your break from school :)
I love Barbara’s cereal, especially the peanut butter and cinnamon. :-)
Whoa! Those biscuits sure look weird…and big! Now I want cold cereal…I haven’t had any in over a month!
I love (never home)maker’s recipes!
Me too! (The idea about adding some espresso powder sounds interesting though, do report if you do Hillary!)
I love Costco – and I LOOOOVE honey rice puffins! They’re corn free too, which is great for me!
You’re GF, right? Why no corn?
All that food looks so delish. I’m going to have to steal some ideas from you asap!
I’m currently in my post Christmas kombucha drinking state, for pretty much the reasons that you listed.
I’ve had shredded wheat, but those round ones are cute…like haystacks!!
mmmm your cereal sounds reallyyyy good right now! i think i’ll do my best to recreate this morning!
ALSO i want to make those energy bites tonight. i actually have all the ingredients!
haha that cereal cracks me up! what are the nutritionals like? i’m curious what kinda nutrients one of those HUGE biscuits has got packed in! :D
xo.
Costco’s greatness definitely requires loads of energy. ;)
I had no idea that true shredded wheat looked like that either. I picture it more along the lines of frosted shredded wheat!
I wish I could find those shredded wheat biscuits in my grocery store…
They look delicious!
And I can’t wait to make homemade hummus so I can try that veggie wrap…
;)
Those energy bites look delicious! I’ve had a Cuisinart for several months now and have yet to make any sort of bites or bars even though I’ve seen so many great recipes on blogs – I think it’s about time I make some. Also – I love that type of shredded wheat. I think it’s more fun to eat than the little shredded minis.
Yummy eats to get your year started right!
I loveee hummus! and btw, your meals look gorgeous! as do those biscuits! They are huge! LOL
yum! those balls look delish :) do you think you could use peanuts or almonds instead of cashews?
I don’t see why not!
Real shredded wheat is crazy. I didn’t know they were round or so huge. I’ve only had frosted mini wheats myself. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I love yours, and am adding it to my reader.
Yum, those energy bites look delish! Kombucha is so good!
gah, you eat such good stuff. i can’t get over it! dang, i love those little round wheaties… i’ve only ever seen boring rectangular shapes, haha.
Did you like that brand of kombucha? I really like GT’s brand but haven’t branched out. I think I’m going to make those energy balls this weekend!!
Yes, I really like that kombucha. I’ve yet to try their other flavors though.
