a few things.

January 17, 2011 by Hillary 22 Comments

Hi! Happy Monday MLK Day. Did I not post yesterday!? Where am I? What day is it? I’m definitely not back into any sort of regular Chico routine yet. The whole no routine thing actually feels rather good. However, I’ll always be a Type A routine list-maker at heart, so let’s talk about a few things…

1. First thing first, the winner of the Barney Butter giveaway…

Katie – please e.mail me your shipping address, so BB can mail your snack packets right away :)

2. I went on an 8 mile hike today with a few friends to Feather Falls. I having a feeling my behind will be sore in the morning from our 3 hour trek. Does this count as x-training? ;)

3. I am obsessed with the people folder in Picasa. Sometimes I get giddy over techy things. Thank you, Google, for being awesome.

& thank you Mom for sharing.

4. I made an emergency trip to the grocery store this evening for chocolate. What sugar cleanse?

5. I have a recipe or two on the way… nuts and chocolate are involved, of course.

6. I am bummed I’m missing The Bachelor tonight since I don’t have cable. Don’t spill the beans!

7. I have a new found love for foam rollers. I played around with one awkwardly [that sounds strange] at the WREC yesterday.

I didn’t look in any way graceful like that.

Do you own a foam roller? If so, where did you purchase it?

That’s enough listage for now. Remember, tomorrow’s Running Tuesday!

Toodles,

HP

What a gorgeous view – I’m sure you enjoyed your hike! I don’t own a foam roller, but I’ve been thinking about getting one a lot lately. I’ve heard they hurt – but in a good way! Enjoy your week.

I’ve never tried a foam roller, but I’ve been seeing them all over the fitness blog-overse lately! :) Those pictures from your hike are breath-taking. It’s nothing like that in Chicago now…too much snow!

A foam roller, what exactly are these used to strengthen? Your back? If so, I need one badly; my back is always killing me, probably because of my (lack of) posture.

They’re used to ‘roll out’ your muscles. They’re not used to strengthen so much as they are to stretch.

I love my foam roller! I bought mine at Academy and I bought my sister one from Target. Both around $20 I think. Worth every penny!

I love hiking, but have yet to go on one with a waterfall – jealous! Foam rolling is great. Ot hurts in a good way, and I think it has prevented me from getting some injuries…I got mine at Big 5!

I was just thinking it’s about time for a Feather Falls hike! I love to take my dog AND she’s usually so wiped I don’t have to take her for a run the next day. :) I was kind of thinking of making it a training run at some point. You should check out the Trail Less Traveled in April in Oroville. I think it’s a 1/4 marathon or 5K, but great views of the lake. I love all the things I can do with my foam roller (and now my grid, too). It keeps my angry hip muscles in check. Love your recipes… keep ’em coming.

I love my foam roller! I got mine from a physical therapy office, and it saves me after long runs. Totally worth the purchase if you ask me!

P.S. Summers for me wouldn’t be the same without hiking! It’s too cold to go hiking now – I’m jealous you got to go!

I just bought one from TJ Maxx for $17. It’s the blue one, which is supposed to hold up better than the white one. I’m using it a lot for my knees.

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
