crazy talk.

There was an e.mail in my inbox when I got home from yoga tonight with reminders about Race Day.

NO iPods!? That’s a good joke. There is NO way in heck I am running 13.1 miles without any music. Especially after I just downloaded the newest version of iTunes, spent time purchasing songs, and had my friend copy a couple podcasts. You’re crazy race organizers… simply crazy.

Do you race with or without an iPod?

I understand it could be a safety issue, but how many iPod running race accidents do you hear of!?

Two more workouts ‘til Race Day… TWO!!

Running to bed…

Of all the running I’ve done, I have never run with an i-pod! I enjoy just hearing nature, my thoughts, etc. I actually hate it in a race when I say “good job” to someone, and there is no reply! (but then I notice the i-pod, and understand!) The only accident I would have around here if I were to wear one is a wild animal sneaking up on me…
13.1 miles would be a long to go w/out music if that is how you were used to training. You can do it, though! I’ll be rooting for you!

My half in May doesn’t allow music devices and I know races that are for the military don’t allow them either. The half I’m running said the safety issue involved air waves and if they needed to communicate to all the runners in a timely fashion? I dunno, something like that.

That’s so silly! For all NYRR it says “not recommended”, but I know my music is low enough and I’m generally attentive enough (though maybe not the last mile or so of a half marathon!) to know what’s going on around me. 15K+ I use an iPod… which means only 4 races so far, but I really can’t imagine running for ~100 minutes (hopefully under that soon!) without music.

I absolutely have to run with music — especially for a half marathon. I’ve run several races where iPods were “banned” but most people wore them anyway.

I’ve heard of that for several races. And actually for triathlons, you will get disqualified if you have an ipod on the bike or the run…so I’ve gotten used to running without music and I LOVE it. I’m sure you will still rock it though :)

It’s crazy! I can run a few miles without music, but I would need it for a half marathon. We talked about this in my internship yesterday – you can be disqualified for wearing earphones if you are competing for money, like the elite runners, but otherwise, you’re good.

ummmm…it does seem strange. BUT, this ipod notice is on the original website…scroll down
    http://www.active.com/running/chico-ca/35th-annual-bidwell-classic-2011

So, I would think you are just going to have to leave it home. Run headset free and just a little bit angry and you’ll probably run faster.
Second odd thing for me…an ipod is a brand name. Are the race organizers suggesting that only Apple personal music players are banned on the course?

Rule created by the USA Track and Field Association for safety…created in 2007, apparently.
    http://www.rrm.com/Newsarchives/archive07/07naparule.htm

“The USATF rules package contained the following justification for the rule change:

The huge proliferation of MP3 players and other audio devices using headphones by road race participants constitutes a safety hazard. These
devices can prevent runners from hearing critical instructions from course monitors, police, and other race officials. Many race directors are reluctant to prohibit these devices in their races for fear of losing entrants. A firm prohibition by USATF will make it easier for these directors to justify bans on these devices in their races.”

I USED TO run every single run/race with an ipod! But someone suggested that I try without as a means to get in better touch with my body and how it felt as I ran. So I gave it a shot and it made a huge difference! I still use my ipod for longs runs on the dreadmill, but when I am outside, I let myself experience the good the bad the pain and adrenaline of the run, without the distraction of music! I suggest giving it a try :)

I have never ran with music… literally never. I can’t imagine doing so, plus, I don’t own an ipod or any mp3 player for that matter. I haven’t downloaded songs since college when everyone used Napster (before we all were told it’s illegal) & I haven’t bought a CD since… probably college, too.

I can’t believe there are no iPods!? I ran an 8K with no iPod a while back and it turned out just fine. I think I actually ‘heard’ my music playing during the race because I practiced with it. I don’t know about you, but I chose songs that help me keep a good pace, so just try to think of them when you run. Otherwise, I remember it being really relaxing and (in the end) enjoyable to have no music.

Good luck with the half and your last two workouts!! You’re going to do great!!

The races I’ve ran all say iPods are discouraged, but people don’t listen. I bet you’ll be fine if you use it. While I see the reasoning behind that restriction, if you trained with it and you love your music (as I do!) then I’d bring it — I bet others will too.

I used to NEVER run with an iPod at all, but only because I had a team in HS and college to run every day with, it would have been weird to wear an iPod. I now *rely* on my iPod to keep me entertained/distracted on my everyday runs, but I will not wear one during a race! I find it takes away from the experience and atmosphere of the race — I love to hear the runners around me, and especially the crowds!

I have run a few races with iPod rules…and one was a relay with a strict team DQ policy. I’m not exactly sure how they enforced it, but a few teams had to stop racing due to violations!

I’m sure you did FANTASTIC out there. We had perfect weather (maybe a little warm?) for a half mary.

I ran it today too. Ya, sans iPod? Heck NO! Actually the whole pace bike thing ya, I broke that rule too. If we’re making not one but TWO laps in our beautiful park (that we probably run in 3-4 days a week already), we need some TUNES! My friend popped up at mile 8 on her cruiser and turned on her tunes with a portable speaker system blaring from her basket for the next 3 miles to keep me from just bailing I was feeling so cruddy. I did pick it up and made it in under 2 hours and maybe under my PR, I’ll know as soon as they post the chip times. ;) I guess I shouldn’t have gone dancing at LaSalles last night for 3 hours, huh?

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
