The Ugly Side of Running

July 9, 2011 by Hillary 14 Comments

Hey hey. Hope y’all had a lovely Saturday.

I started my day bright (sunny!) and early to crank out my last, long training run. I met my friend who runs track and XC for our school. We set out 7:00am and I couldn’t have imagined starting a minute later. There wasn’t a lot of shade on our all-trail route through the beautiful lower and upper Bidwell Park, and I’m a rookie when it comes to exercising in the heat. We ran for 84 minutes total, with a couple necessary stops for water. Unfortunately, I don’t know our exact distance, but I think our goal of 11 miles turned into a hot, 10 miles. I’m pretty impressed with how my body held up on the run, minus a few things I noticed when I removed my dusty running shoes. Ummm… do you see that bruise on my right toe!?

037

I can’t figure out the unexplainable bruise. My armpits are also chafed (ouch!), as well as my chest. I’ll spare you photos. Running is a beautiful thing, but sometimes it isn’t so pretty. Thank you, Body, for puttin’ up with me and my running addiction.

I came home endorphin and Vitamin D happy… and hungry for pancakes.

033-1

I used my recently-purchased g-free mix to make a short stack of ‘cakes.

030

In MY mix:
  • 2/3 c. mix
  • 2/3 c. unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 T chia seeds
  • 1 egg

This ratio made 4 cakes, of which I ate 3. I layered my cakes with plain, 0% Greek, reduced-sugar apricot preserves, and farmers’ market strawberries and 1/2 peach – delicious!

021-1

Layer cake for breakfast is the new oatmeal ;)

The rest of my day included all good things: poolside reading, outdoor studying, phone chat with the madre, $3 swimsuit!, and well… now it’s time to finish up my weekend laundry with the country tunes and air conditioning both blasting. Hehe.

Have a good night,

Hill

Those pancakes look good! I recently bought a buckwheat mix that is horrendous. I can’t stomach throwing it out but I’m not sure what to do with it. I totally can’t imagine eating through the whole thing. It’s that bad..

As a college student, I’m always wondering how you afford such healthy groceries!
I hit up my local farmers’ market for produce, but I find between working 20+ hours a week, my credit hours, hitting the gym, etc. it’s extremely hard to plan ALL clean/organic meals. Sometimes you don’t have time to cook/can’t afford all the fresh ingredients, so I just wondered if you had any tips!

      Hi Steph,
Not all of my meals are “clean” and organic. I try to buy organic produce, but I don’t always. As a busy student myself, I know how it can be difficult to plan meals; though I think it’s a smart idea, I don’t plan my meals in advance. I’m often throwing things together when I come home late. During the summer, I have more freedom to plan meals, and coincidentally, that is when the markets are at their prime. My grocery bills are more than I’d like, but health is my “religion”. I can’t think of many other things that I’m more passionate about. Spending the extra money and the extra time to make something from scratch is what makes me the Nutrition Nut I am. I’ll be posting a “college kitchen” post soon-ish, but for tips… 1) buy in bulk, 2) use coupons, and 3) use the Dirty Dozen list when shopping for organic produce.

You go, girl! 10 miles is quite an accomplishment. I need to get some pancake mix–I need a breakfast revamp, too!

Tie your shoe laces differently, might help! Shoes might not be big enough.

Oh runner’s feet…I have it too. It’s actually bad right now…one of my toe nails is about to fall off, so I’m trying to figure out what I did to cause that. Maybe I was running with my toe pushing up against my shoe? Either way, it’s a BAD summer for being able to paint my toes lol.

It must be a mutual runner’s brain, but my thought less than 10 minutes ago was to make pancakes for breakfast. Looks like I know what I WILL be making now!!! That mix looks amazing. I never thought packaged pancake mix came with such amazing ingredients. Totally looking down that aisle next time!

Love your shoes! I think the ugliest part is tripping when running! I do it way too often.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
