First Date with #Fran

October 31, 2012 by Hillary 12 Comments

Excuse me, October. Where did you go!? Really, though… is it already time to count down the days until Thanksgiving? Unreal.

One day at time. Let’s talk about today’s meals and moves. There were some good ones!

First things first: breakfast. I celebrated Waffle Wednesday with #GF toaster waffles, almond buttah, banana, hemp seeds and honey. It never gets old.

For lunch: the last bowl of my vegan black bean sweet tater quinoa chili with creamy avocado. Definitely glad I checked that off my Fall Bucket List.

Fast forward to 5:00pm and I was antsy to get moving after a long day at the desk. A fast 4-mile treadmill run in 31:30 (including 5 minutes of walking) was a sweaty way to warm-up for my date with Fran.

Fran is a classic CrossFit benchmark WOD, meaning it’s used to measure your progress. My first official WOD at my new box was “Messed Up Fran” on September 13th, so I had an idea what I was getting myself into; I’ve never done the original WOD, so I was still a little anxious for my date tonight. Unfotrunatly, I can’t compare the two WOD times, as the first included running, but I did make an improvement on the thrusters: 45lbs. to 55lbs. #progress

An intense workout meant a reason to celebrate Halloween in adult fashion (and cross another item off my bucket list).

Hoppy Halloween!!

Did you celebrate the holiday today?

CrossFit friends, are you a fan of Fran?

Wow girl, we have such similar food choices today. I’m eating waffles with banana and hemp right now and was just thinking of having my leftover chili for lunch. :) Two minds think alike!

I have been subscribed to your updates for a few months and I love your site! Odd question though…what shoes are you wearing? I love my running shoes, but just interested in the kind you wear and why?

I have been wearing Asics to run in for years. I think I’ve had about 7 pairs of the 2100 shoe model. The shoes in the photo are Nike Frees – a huge fan of them for shorter runs and the gym.

What kind of shorts are those? I am always looking for some good ones that are comfy! Also, what kind of workouts have you been doing? I want my arms to look like that!

They are the Nike Pro Core 2.5″ Compression Short – very comfy.

Thanks! In the past year to year and a half, I’ve really increased the amount of strength training I do. I would contribute a lot of it to kettlebell training and a variety of push-ups. Now that I do CrossFit 3-5x/week, I’m certain that it does/will have an effect on my upper body physique.

I want to love CrossFit, but it just seems so expensive! How do you justify/afford the cost? Also, I agree with Cristina. ROCKIN BOD babe!

CrossFit is expensive (I still don’t understand why so), and it is tough to justify the cost. Who knows if I will be able to afford it long-term, but for now, I can afford it because I get a discount through my job, and I justify it because it makes me incredibly HAPPY :)

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
