My weighted workouts seem to be fewer and farther between lately; but, yesterday, I wanted to pick up my bells and get in a good sweat. I enjoy being creative with my home workouts, but I was lacking motivation and inspiration, so I called on the boy… the boyfriend.
<insert short story>
The boy and I met at my college rec center way back when. The days when I used to run a few too many laps around the indoor track as he was training clients. The days when I put more effort into dressing for the gym than I did for the majority of my day.
This was the boy that taught my first kettlebell class… where I found myself with sore muscles three weeks there after. We had our share of workout dates — slamming sandbags together, looking silly doing spiderman push-ups, bruising ourselves with box jumps, all the while listening to “ghetto” rap music. Studying exercise physiology and working as a personal trainer for four plus years, the boy has taught me a thing or two about exercise.
So… he texted me a workout yesterday afternoon (per my polite request), knowing which equipment I have on hand.
I made a few changes, naturally. (This is typical of our workouts together.) I suppose I should call it the “boyfriend-inspired” workout; nevertheless, it kicked my butt. Good job, P!
What You’ll Need:
- 1 dumbbell — I used 10lb.
- 1 kettlebell — I used 25lb.
Exercises:
- inchworm: stand with your feet hip-width apart; bend over and touch the floor in front of your feet with both hands. keeping your legs straight and core tight, walk your hands forward to a push-up position, without letting your hips drop. pause, then slowly walk your hands towards your feet.
- single-arm high pull
- single-arm swing
Notes:
- up/down planks: switch arms after the 5th rep
- russian twists: 1 rep = right and left
- workout time: approx. 30-35 minutes

Those with significant others, do you enjoying exercising together?
Oh I love this post, such a cute story! :) And I love inchworms, great exercise! And great workout, pinning it!
Aww what a cute story! Looks like he gave you a great workout. That’s awesome that the two of you are workout buddies! My boyfriend prefers sports, and I prefer the gym. Occasionally we’ll play tennis together, but I’m pretty bad at it!
Nice workout! I’ll do it tomorrow, as I haven’t planed my workouts for this week…this is just what I needed! Thnx for sharing!
I love the fact you two met at a rec center! I always say I would love to meet a guy who is just as into exercising and eating healthy as I was so I wouldn’t feel like a complete freak. Also, since I’ve had disordered eating struggles, a PT boyfriend would probably benefit me A LOT.
Love the story!! My boyfriend and I exercise all the time together, even though he’s way faster than me (and an Ironman). We did all of our long runs together during training for the SF Marathon.
i love working out with the boy, that is a friend, because he makes me do workouts that i might usually say no to! he also got me to do pull-ups, so now i feel pretty BA haha. loving this workout!
I always push myself harder when I workout with my boyfriend. We are both really competitive and we push each other.
Aww, you two are so cute together! I love that you workout together, too; it’s fun to share that motivation with your significant other.
I have a really hard time getting Brandon to workout with me. He was in such great shape when we first met and over the years, he has stopped working out all together. It’s a work in progress though! :)
That looks like an awesome workout! I absolutely love working out with my boyfriend. :) We usually go to the gym together and hike, play tennis, etc. at least once a week!
Thanks, Hill. I always love peaking at what you’re up to since you’re so far away! I took my boyfriend, Phoxx, to his first yoga class ever…and it was a hot 90 min vinyasa class. He found himself giggling several times and “psssting” at me to look over at his bendy efforts. I try to go to this class every day during the week. It was a blast to see his joy and share in something I enjoy doing often solo.
Thanks for commenting, Cassie :) I could certainly use more yoga in my life. Hot vinyasa is no joke!
This looks great! I haven’t gotten into kettlebells yet… I should probably try using them! My husband and I run occasionally together, but should do it more. We do enjoy hiking and going on long bike rides :)
I think I need to get a kettlebell to try this workout! I love to workout with my bf and hoping it’ll happen a lot more once we’re not 6+ hours apart.
How did you get the cute filter around the photo of you and your beau? :)
Good question. I edited it a while back – perhaps even with an app on my iPhone – but PicMonkey.com probably has something similar.
Did this workout this morning at the gym – loved it! It was definitely deceptively hard and it was my first time doing high pulls with a kettlebell. Afterwards, a lady in the locker room said I’m always such an inspiration when I’m doing my workouts.
Thanks for the sweat sesh – looking forward to the next one!! :)
What an awesome, positive way to start the day! :)
Aw I love your cute story! Great sounding workout, too. Working out with a significant other is always more fun than alone!
This looks like a great workout! I have never been able to exercise with my significant other. Even now being married, I don’t like it — unless it is something ‘outdoorsy’ like mountain biking or hiking!
Aww, cute post & picture!
My husband and I do lots of runs and hikes together, but we don’t lift together. He has a gym membership and I just lift dumbbells at home.
