Tuesday Tidbits | 1.14.14

January 14, 2014 by Hillary 32 Comments

Life tidbits on the Nutrition Nut front…

1. My official first day of school at IIN was yesterday! Insert minor freak out. Don’t get me wrong, I am excited about the journey ahead, just a tad overwhelmed (as I always was at the start of a new college semester).

2. Switching things up from my living room workouts the past few days has been really nice; I thrive in a gym environment. That said, enter gym pet peeves: “Girlfriend, why are you wearing lifting gloves on the stair climber!?”, and “Bro, I think you’ve done enough shrugs… for your lifetime.”

3. I am so stupidly happy to a part of the Anytime Fitness team. Head on the over to the AF blog for more posts from this nut. I’m sharing meal planning tips and a mighty tasty oatmeal recipe this month.

4. I don’t think I mentioned that one of my Christmas gifts from The Boy was flannel sheets (since I am always bundled up in a million layers when I get into bed). I’ve only been late to work a couple of times ;) It’s impossible to get out of bed now.

5. I am terribly disappointed that I can not watch The Bachelor online this season. What the heck ABC! Do any of you know a sneaky way around this? This chick doesn’t have cable.

6. BIG changes at work. In other words, my daily mantra is “keep calm and carry on.” Insert freak out #2.

7. Bikini shopping for Kauai. Can it be March already? But, wait… about that paper white skin. I can’t forget to pack the SPF 50.

8. These Paleo brownies must be in my kitchen stat.

9. Two Lululemon Bang Buster headbands are in route to my door this week. Who wears the Bang Buster? I hope I love them as much as I do the other Lulu headwear.

10. The gist of the first two weeks of 2014: ch-ch-changes = slightly stressed Hillary. Therefore, let us ignore tidbit #5. I don’t have time for silly reality TV.

That gelato is my favorite, well maybe the sea salt caramel, but close tie! Also I love the Lululemon Bang Buster – I’ve spent lots of $$$ over years on bands that don’t stay put, but this one doesn’t move and I tend to forget it is there keeping my face hit free :)

I have an amazing to-do/must-see list for Kauai from a friend that grew up there – I’ll look for your email and send it your way! We honeymooned there and it’s incredible. Where on the island are you staying? I must say – make a reservation for dinner at The Beach House now – the restaurant fills up super far in advance and the sunset is the best on the island! Everything else will be in my email!

Yup! Currently listening to the Alicia Silverstone lecture in the first module. You should join the FB group of Californians who just started class with us if you haven’t already — it’s called Californians 4 Total Health. They’re doing a meet-up next month that I am probably going to go to if I can make it!

I definitely don’t have time to watch The Bachelor this season with this new job, but I believe you can watch the full episode on abc.com without verifying or anything a full week after it has been aired on TV. I just checked and last week’s episode is up!

Ahhh gym pet peeves! Ha love them! There are so many strange sightings in the gym at the beginning of the year. I can’t stand when people are on a piece of equipment browsing Facebook or twitter just taking there time. Oblivious that there might actually be someone else who wants to use the machine!

That gelato looks crazy! Where can I find that? Good luck on a new semester for you, I am sure it sucks going back to school but I hear that the IIN is a great program from their alumni!

The only place in Hawaii I have been is Waikiki when I was younger, next time I go I want to go to a more relaxing and beachy city.

My biggest pet peeve are men who hog the FreeMotion machines, but will stop and chat with their buddies and goof off. I have yet to work up the confidence to ask for them to shove off ;)

What are your thoughts on IIN so far? I started the same time as you, but I actually ended up withdrawing a few days ago. It wasn’t quite what I expected so I was wondering what your thoughts were! Also, if you need ideas for Kauai let me know, I’m in Maui :)

YES! I would love Kauai suggestions — email me?

So far, I am enjoying IIN. I am thinking I’ll do regular (monthly) IIN updates on the blog. Since I just started the program, I’ll wait a bit longer to discuss my thoughts :)

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
