April Intentions

April 1, 2014 by Hillary 12 Comments

Good morning and happy April! April already!? I swear it couldn’t be.

The first of the month is my favorite — you get to reboot with a fresh start. While I never did make aspirations for 2014, the renewal that is tied to Spring inspired me to set intentions for the fourth month of twenty fourteen.

Inspired by task master Caroline’s intentions series, I have noted a few things I would like to guide me through the April, and the beginning of a new season.

1 // Share more about food on Nutrition Nut via recipes and nutrition topics

Over the years that Nutrition Nut has grown, it feels as though my sharing of recipes and nutrition information is not as abundant. I’d like to create a couple of new recipes this month and/or share more of my daily eats.

2 // IINteract more with my IIN classmates

School is moving right along. Now that we have dove into the coaching material, it’s important that we practice our coaching skills/techniques with our classmates. I’d like to practice with a fellow student four times this month (ideally, once per week).

3 // Reach out to a friend once a week

Most of my friendships have evolved into long distance relationships as we’ve gone our separate ways for jobs, families, experiences, etc. Whether it’s a phone call, e-mail, or text conversation, I’d like to connect with at least one of my friends each week to keep our connection close albeit miles apart.

4 // Build up to some longer distance runs, 6-8 miles

While I have not been running impressive mileage lately, the running I have done has been mostly pain-free (fingers crossed). I would be thrilled to run a couple of 6-8 mile runs in April. #gothedistance

Do you set monthly goals/intentions?

I’m looking forward to seeing some more recipes! I’ve been setting myself monthly challenges for the last few months; the start of a month is such a nice time to set your mind to something new :)

I love the goals or intentions you’ve set for April. They’re all very easily achievable, but yet enough of a challenge to keep you motivated to make time for them. :) I’ve set the goal to get back on track with my half-marathon training after my Physical Fitness test today. Yikes!

Love these intentions – especially with connecting with those close friends that are separated. Between graduating college and being in the military, my friends are all over the country/world. I think I’m going to make it a point to call someone once a week as well :)

Love these intentions! Especially the one about connecting to friends. A lot of my friends are far away now, too, which is really sad… but nice that we still keep in touch!
I, too, feel like April 1st is a fresh start :) My big intentions for April are to save money for summer vacations and clean out my room.

I love your concept of creating intentions on a monthly basis. Setting one big ‘New Year’s Resolution’ can seem so daunting and cause people to quickly lose focus. Simple monthly intentions seem easier to keep track of and truly invest time into. I’m off to set a few intentions of my own…

Love the term intentions vs goals! Great idea about networking – I’m hoping to spend some time getting to know local practitioners I can work with.

Nope – I’m a dietitian, but I’m just starting to build my local and online private practice, so hoping to connect with others to refer to!

Looks like some awesome intentions! I really like that you are going to make it a point to stay in contact with long distance friends each week – this is something I need to do a lot more of. Looking forward to seeing your daily eats!

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
