Good morning, dearest readers. Thanks for popping by. Today I am coming at ya with my second IIN Check-In. Did you catch IIN Check-In 1: Primary Nutrition?
I can hardly believe I am smack in the middle of my twelfth week of school! This means I am more than a quarter of the way to becoming a certified holistic health coach — can’t wait for that. I am really enjoying the program, so if you are curious about the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, be sure to scope it out and email me if you have questions.
<< I can likely hook you up with a tuition discount. >>
Like I said, school is super and I am more inspired – and glad I took the plunge into the program – with each new module that I open every week. The work load is picking up slightly now that we are practicing coaching skills with fellow classmates, but it’s been a positive task thus far to reach out to other students. Besides making contact with like-minded coaches-in-training, I have been chatting with IIN graduates with a paying clientele. Paige, for example, is a huge inspiration!
I am certainly looking forward to connecting more with my classmates this spring (see April Intention #2). I have my third group “Coach Call” tonight and a couple of practice sessions with students next week.
Alright, enough about the curriculum. I am sure some of you are still wondering what the heck a health coach is for heaven’s sake!
Health Coach Defined
“A Health Coach offers guidance and inspiration to help clients shift their behavior to healthier habits by making step-by-step changes to their diet and lifestyle. The client learns about new, healthy foods and the concept of primary foods: relationships, physical activity, career, and spirituality… Health Coaches focus on teaching clients to become self-sufficient by observing their own unique responses to various modifications and choosing health-promoting behaviors that work for them.”
Why Health Coaching?
“In our current health care system, almost no time is spent discussing daily diet and lifestyle.” When was the last time your doctor asked you about your sleep, how much water you are drinking, or the status of your most dependent relationships?
What does a Health Coach do?
“A Health Coach is a guide and mentor who empowers clients to take responsibility for their own health and supports them to implement and sustain lifestyle and behavior changes that will contribute to the achievement of their personal wellness goals.”
Common areas a Health Coach may help with: weight management, food cravings, sleep, energy, stress management, and digestion.
What does a Health Coach NOT do?
“A Health Coach does not take the place of any medical practitioner; rather, he or she serves as the missing link–the patient guide–that helps develop strategies to enact real, lasting lifestyle changes that address not only the diagnostic label (i.e. pre-diabetic), but also serve to enhance the client’s overall wellness.”

Now that we’ve got that out in the open, hopefully you have a better idea of what I am working towards…
Again, feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have.
Happy almost Friday! Be well.
Congratulations! That’s so exciting. I have always been interested in what health coaches do and don’t do – sounds like something really beneficial for a lot of people!! Thanks for the info :)
This may be silly, but what types of places hire health coaches? Or are you planning on working for yourself?
Good question — a lot of health coaches do become entrepreneurs as well (working for themselves). IIN teaches us how to do so. However, health coaches can work in many different venues including medical offices and larger companies that support employee wellbeing.
Thanks for sharing all of this! It’s been a dream of mine; I’m slowly working towards getting my health coaching certificate as well! So proud and happy for you girl! xoxo
Are you enrolled at IIN?
Not yet. It’s a goal of mine to enroll within the next few years!
Congrats. I’m so excited for you! :) I think it would be awesome to do this someday, but I don’t think it’s in the cards for me right now. Thanks for sharing!
I went to IIN; such a good school! I loved my experience learning about holistic nutrition, chatting with and being inspired by other students, and preparing to start my own coaching venture. I don’t know about you, but I had such a hard time narrowing down my niche while in school. It truly required divine intervention, but He showed me the way. I currently run a ministry for women struggling with disordered eating. Any thoughts on what your niche will be?
Still trying to figure that one out… thinking young women… but haven’t solidified anything yet.
It’s so important to look at the whole lifestyle, which takes much longer than people have with their doctors. I find my initial session runs usually 90 min. just for an assessment!
Can’t wait to start health coaching! Glad you’re enjoying the program as well! It’s a very exciting path we’re on. :)
I actually wasn’t positive what a health coach was either! I was just assuming a dietitian!

Happy to hear it’s going so well! Health coaching was so helpful for me during a real transitional period of my life; I wish everyone had access to it!
It’s so strange that IIN keeps appearing for me. Someone I know recently enrolled, then I came across your blog to find out you were as well. Last night I went to see Gabby Bernstein speak and she mentioned how she was a graduate of the program. I said to the girl next to me “I keep hearing about IIN” and she said “I’m enrolled.” I think the universe is telling me something! Love your posts, they give a great look into what the program is like.
At IIN, we call those appearances “synchronicity.” Let me know if you’d like more info on the program – it’s great. So cool you got to see Gabby speak!

Whoops, this was for your current post ha!
You are doing so great!! :) Keep it up!!
Aww – thanks, Tara! :)
Hi Hillary!
I love your blog! I get particularly excited when I read about your health coaching. I’d love more information, but I don’t see how to email you! Can you please give me your email address, or reply to me by email? I do have questions!
Thanks so much,
Stacey
Awe. Thanks for including me in this post. I’m honored to be an inspiration. You’re going to do great, Hillary!
I know this is a little late, but I just came across this post. It got me so excited because I am planning on enrolling for August/September. I’m glad you like the program.
There are 2 things that I find hold me back…1. The fear of being an entrepreneur and 2. If someone was to ask me what my dream job is, I would say to own a practice that supports women in their relationship with food and enables them to live a happier, healthier lifestyle using a holistic approach. This description is exactly what I am working towards, but the fact that it is my “dream” career sometimes makes me feel like it isn’t attainable, then the fear kicks in!
I know you will be a fantastic health coach :) Keep it up.
Thanks, Paige!
Please let me know when you decide to enroll (I sure hope you do!), and I can hook you up with a tuition discount.
I can completely understand your two reservations. Those are two of my personal fears as well. I assure you that your dream career IS possible, and IIN does a great job setting you up with everything you need to be an entrepreneur… of course you have to have the passion and motivation, but it appears you do.
Awesome! Will do, thanks.
