Spring Allergies & Six Miles

April 13, 2014 by Hillary 11 Comments

Pssst! Tomorrow is the last day to enter the Love Grown Foods Power O’s GIVEAWAY.

The other post title option I considered was “The Week I Didn’t Exercise.”

Because, well, that’s nearly the truth.

Last week’s strong week of workouts (and all the running!), unfortunately, did not run (pun intended) into this week.

I didn’t sweat a rest day on Monday, but when my body needed additional rest Tuesday and Wednesday as well, I knew something up was up. I felt proud of myself for warding off all colds and flus this past winter; but, I finally caught a cold (or the worst spring allergies) this week.

I hate to admit that I think the seasonal allergies are here to stay a while longer – ugh – but I am hopeful my workouts will pick up next week. Where are the burpees at!?

Workouts | Week of April 7

Monday – Rest Day

Tuesday – Rest Day

Wednesday – Rest Day

Thursday – 30 min. walk (including 100 step-ups) + Beach Yoga with Karena (20 min.)

basically a rest day

Friday – Rest Day

Saturday – 30 min. run (AM) + 20 min. walk (PM) + a short sandbag circuit:

3 rounds x 12 reps each (sandbag @ 35lb.)

  • squats
  • lunges
  • rows
  • deadlifts
  • shredders (push-up to squat clean + overhead press)

Sunday – 6 mile run + Beach Yoga with Karena (20 min.)

With those April Intentions on my mind, I wanted to attempt a second long run for the month since I know they’ll be harder to accomplish in the upcoming weekends. While it was a slow Sunday Runday, I’m grateful I was outside enjoying the spring sunshine for an hour (albeit the pollen festival and sneezing episodes)… that my knee caused me little grief, and that my body didn’t have notable difficulty running six miles after a week of life as a couch potato.

I like to take a week off of training once every few months when my training plan allows. I’m sorry about your allergies, too… I have them to the point where I can’t breathe properly. Thank goodness for natural remedies and OTC allergy meds. :( they’ve been bad this year! Have a good week!

Honestly, I just took about 2 months off from all high intensity ex. (lifting, running) and did only walking, yoga, and pilates… and to tell you the truth, I’ve never felt calmer or more at peace. I had been over-stressing my body and it definitely needed an extended break. Don’t beat yourself up for missing a few days :)

Yep, but more than one day of rest used to absolutely terrify me… no jokes! I’d almost trained myself to NOT listen to my body, if that makes sense.

Fortunately, I’ve changed my ways and have realized the importance of rest. No longer do I use exercise as the number one tool to maintain my weight. I exercise because I can, and am able to maintain my weight with nutrition alone (obvs I still exercise… keeps me sane AND it’s MY time). I definitely have rest weeks, or weeks of more restorative activity from time-to-time and I have to say, it’s actually quite rejuvenating. Amazing what rest can do for the body. And usually, I come back feeling stronger and faster (after the first few minutes of feeling totally winded lol).

Hope you’re feeling better!! I’ve definitely taken a whole week off before, also due to not feeling well. I tend to get at least one cold per year that knocks me out for a whole week. Sometimes the body needs the rest :)

Rest weeks I find to be so important! I take 2 a year typically in correlation with vacations. Great job though on the 6 mile run :) I do have seasonal allergies and I can’t stand it; I have to workout inside and take the runs to the treadmill, which almost kill me!

As much as it stinks sometimes, rest weeks are helpful in the long run. Last week was kind of a rest week for me, too; I walked outside every day but nothing more. I just needed it!

I feel your pain! I suffer from allergies, too, and they are so annoying. I’ve had a sinus headache for like 5 days straight and my eyes are all red and rashy looking. It’s lovely! Ha. Any who, talk to you tomorrow! :)

Ugh… allergies! I never experienced them until I moved to Chico. Now, living in Sac, I have them from time to time, but nothing like when I lived in Chico!

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
