April Intentions | Review

April 30, 2014 by Hillary 5 Comments

Howdy! I just finished this green smoothie and am feeling refreshed and pretty jazzed about the final day of April: the sun is shining warmly, and the weekend is in near sight… which means fresh strawberries from the farmer’s market and maybe a long run.

Speaking of long runs, I am popping in today to recap how things went with those April Intentions I set at the beginning of the month.

1 // Share more about food on Nutrition Nut via recipes and nutrition topics

Over the years that Nutrition Nut has grown, it feels as though my sharing of recipes and nutrition information is not as abundant. I’d like to create a couple of new recipes this month and/or share more of my daily eats.

Of my four intentions, this is the one I made the least progress with. I am trying not to be so hard on myself for not producing Pinterest-publishable recipes, and focus on what I have managed to accomplish. Follow me on Instagram to see some of my daily eats and treats!

2 // IINteract more with my IIN classmates

School is moving right along. Now that we have dove into the coaching material, it’s important that we practice our coaching skills/techniques with our classmates. I’d like to practice with a fellow student four times this month (ideally, once per week).

Yes! I had five calls with fellow students this month, in addition to my group Coach Call. It’s great connecting with other students and practicing/role playing; although, I will admit, I am feeling slightly anxious about needing to practice what we call “closing the deal.” More IIN updates to come!

3 // Reach out to a friend once a week

Most of my friendships have evolved into long distance relationships as we’ve gone our separate ways for jobs, families, experiences, etc. Whether it’s a phone call, e-mail, or text conversation, I’d like to connect with at least one of my friends each week to keep our connection close albeit miles apart.

I think I had this in the back of my mind most evenings after work, but I didn’t follow through with it as much I would have liked. This intention is certainly rolling over into May as one of my main motives!

4 // Build up to some longer distance runs, 6-8 miles

While I have not been running impressive mileage lately, the running I have done has been mostly pain-free (fingers crossed). I would be thrilled to run a couple of 6-8 mile runs in April. #gothedistance

Done! I started the month off with a bang, unintentionally running 8.5 miles. The following weekend I ran a slower six, and I have been fitting in shorter spurts of running here and there. I am hoping to continue the pain-free running in May.

Did you set monthly goals? How did you do?

What’s new and good for May!?

Your runs look beautiful! It’s finally starting to get nicer outside here, so I’m starting to build up to longer runs as well. My May goals are to continue working on an intuitive eating/anti-diet program I’m doing locally where I see clients, as well as to turn off my computer at night. Sometimes, it’s hard to turn off the work when most of it’s on my computer.

Love these intentions! Most of my friendships are long distance as well. I honestly used to have a list of friends (weird I know), but I did, and I would make sure I contacted them each, each month, whether it’s just a text to say hello, or an email, etc. It’s tough these days, because people don’t stay close anymore; at the same time, technology should make it easier, right? Long story short, I kind of stopped doing this, and reading this reminded me that I need to get back in the habit of doing it again. Thank you! :)

You’re taking on a lot right now, so don’t be too hard on yourself for not posting as many recipes as you hoped. Posts like that are sooo time consuming.. making the food, taking photos, writing the post. I don’t know how food bloggers do it!

I’m not sure if you’ve talked about your experiences with Integrative Nutrition, but I would love to hear more about it!

Also, if you would be interested, me and few other bloggers host a “Did You Know” link-up the first Friday of every month to share posts on nutrition, health, and fitness topics. Just thought I would share if you might be interested in joining in! (The link-up is in my last post FYI.)

Hi Emily – Yes, I’ve written a couple of posts entirely about IIN so far, and I plan to share more soon. You can find them on the Health Coaching page :)

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
