My Approach to Healthy Traveling

Next Sunday, I am going somewhere I have never been before (isn’t that always fun!?). I am headed to North Carolina for work. I’ll be in the Asheville area for a full week, and I am pretty darn excited.

If you have any recommendations for good eats, please share!

NC

I’ll be living out of a hotel for five nights; so, naturally, being the health nut that I am, I’ve already thought about how this will “throw off” my normal, safe, comfortable daily healthy lifestyle.

My week in NC is going to be a busy one, with long days orientating new employees about the wellness program at the brewery. I imagine that I will get plenty of steps in walking around the facility, but when I think of travel (whether for work or for leisure), the health nut in me thinks of two things: 1) food and 2) fitness.

What will I eat? I’ll have to eat out all week. When will I be able to exercise? Is there a gym at the hotel?

Who else thinks like this?

While I don’t want to throw my healthful lifestyle out the window for six days, I do want to experience the culture (i.e. eat Southern food) and enjoy this unique opportunity. Here are a few ways that I plan to sustain my healthy habits while not making my personal fitness and food choices be the focus of my travel:

– Walk as much as possible (wear my pedometer)

– Attend 1-2 yoga classes at the brewery or downtown Asheville

– Use the hotel gym a few times for quick HIIT/interval workouts

5 No Equipment Travel Workouts

– Prepare my own breakfasts and most snacks

Barney Butter recently sent me samples of their newest and fanciest almond butters, which will most definitely be traveling in my carry-on.

When in NC, I’ll have access to a co-op where I will stock my hotel mini fridge with apples, bananas, and carrots to pair with these flavorful almond butter packets. Plus, I foresee making oatmeal with nut butter in the morning… and dark chocolate with the vanilla/espresso flavor, well that is what I call a jet lag pick-me-up.

What are your healthy living tips for traveling?

What are your health hacks for air travel + hotel living?

Disclosure: Barney Butter provided me with product, but this is not a sponsored post.

As always, opinions are entirely my own.

Vanilla bean espresso almond butter sounds amazing!

I try and make some portable healthy snacks at home to take with me if I know I’m going to have a long travel day.

    Have fun in North Carolina!

Boiled eggs made in the coffee pot. Thank goodness for refrigerators in hotel rooms!

I definitely utilize the hotel gym whenever I’m traveling, like you said. And walking! I try to get a hotel room that is on a higher floor as well and always try to take the stairs up to the floor and down when possible.

As for food, I make a shopping trip when I get to my destination to stock up on some basics I couldn’t bring with me.

I think like that, too! I usually bring too many healthy snacks and end up bringing them back home!

I always bring healthy snacks when traveling, and scope out what the hotel gym will have available + available outdoor activities and yoga classes etc. :)

Oh yea, I definitely think like this too! Your tips are all ones that I implement when I travel. I always make sure to have a lot of healthy snacks on hand, because sometimes you never know what the food situation will be like!

I travel a lot for work and my biggest concerns are always food and fitness. I make a big effort to get up early and fit my workout in because it will never happen at the end of the day, there is always a work dinner or I am exhausted from a long day. For food, I always have nuts and granola bars (like Kind bars) on me so I can have a healthy snack if I need it.

Hi there! I love traveling to new places. For me traveling with food is key to success. I always pack my own breakfast and lunch for the airport on travel day in disposable containers. That way I am not stuck eating airport food. My coworkers are all use to my habits by now and no longer make fun of me, but rather say “Man, I wish I had done that instead of eating this burger.” I also travel with a couple pieces of fruit, almond butter packets, Quest bars, and some bags of almonds that I create at home for each day. Sometimes I make my own bags of granola or trail mix. My homemade trail mix was a lifesaver for my boyfriend and I when we went to Paris. Amazing how I take what seems like a lot, but I always eat it all and am happy I brought it.

I also love to walk on trips – and bring my running gear everywhere. For easy work outs, I love the J & J 7 Minute App which has great body weight workouts you can do in any hotel room or gym. I always bring healthy snacks. My breakfast hack for airplanes is Vigilant Eats cereal. You just add water and the hemp milk powder creates an awesome cereal. Also I try to drink LOTS of water.

Laughing Seed Cafe and Rosetta’s Kitchen are AMAZING for more vegetarian-friendly/healthy options, and Early Girl Eatery is a great place to find delicious, farm-to-table Southern comfort food.

No problem! I went to college in NC and we used to take trips up to Asheville. I have a feeling healthy travel will be no problem for you in that city — it’s great! I actually live in OR now, so enjoy NC for me!

Instagram post 2188697053505017711_212296339 When you think of Beautycounter, 'small business' may not be the first thing that comes to mind.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A B Corporation founded in 2013 that offers more than 150 products, is an advocacy leader for clean beauty, and was the number one Googled beauty brand in 2018? Not so small.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But, the business I run is truly small. I wear many hats in my role not excluded to owner, mentor, consultant, customer service, accounting, marketing, and so on. I set my own personal goals and do what I can to work toward achieving them.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
While Beautycounter may be a loud voice in the beauty industry, I try to make the relationships with my clients sincere and personal. When you receive a follow-up email or thank you card or gift from me - those are written, purchased, planned, and sent by me. Much thought and many hours are put in behind the scenes.⁣⁣ 📬
⁣⁣
Not only is the majority of my work incredibly enjoyable, it is also entirely rewarding to be able to help you make the switch to safer and get safer products into your home.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Almost two years later, my Beautycounter business continues to grow - thanks to all of you. I am THANKFUL for this opportunity to be your consultant. Thank you for supporting my small business and the clean beauty movement!⁣⁣

Instagram post 2183017690054888249_212296339 If you think I’m just selling lipstick, you’re not paying attention. 💄⁣
⁣
Swipe right to see how I feel when someone asks “So, what’s next?” (a.k.a. “When are you going to get a real job?”)⁣
⁣
You see, I don’t look at it like they may: switching from a wonderfully unique job in corporate wellness to “selling skincare and makeup”, working from home (or wherever I please). ⁣
⁣
Instead, I see how aligned my life and career path has been. I went from working for one incredible environmentally-conscious, family-owned company that puts people and the planet first while simultaneously creating a product that leads its craft industry (🍺) to another: a forward-thinking @bcorporation that is transparent about their sourcing/ingredients and advocates for social change while consciously creating personal care products that perform.⁣
⁣
By purchasing @beautycounter ’s beautiful products this holiday season (or any time of year), you’re doing more than gifting a gorgeous lip gloss or luxurious moisturizer. You are voting with your dollar for #cleanbeauty to be the norm; most importantly, you are showing that you give a damn about your health, the health of your loved ones, and the health of our planet.⁣
⁣
For me, it’s all about health — it always has been and always will be. ⁣

Instagram post 2181017522292059910_212296339 It’s been fun, Hyde Park. ⁣
⁣
As it turns out, staying in an itty bitty AirBNB for 6 weeks(!) while our floors got replaced wasn’t so bad after all. To be honest, I enjoyed the boujee South Tampa life much more than life in the suburbs. ⁣
⁣
I’ll miss walking to free community yoga classes in the village, neighborhood walks with Koba admiring the humongous, historic century old homes, treating myself to many @buddybrewcoffee matcha lattes just because, the 5 minute drive down Bayshore Boulevard to workout at the base gym, and more. ⁣
⁣
Sometimes, most times, it does us justice to shake up our environment. Because what at first seemed like it’d be a headache turned out to be a blessing in disguise — the gift of feeling C A L M when “home base” was in a season of transition. ⁣
⁣
Thanks for a few of my favorite weeks in Florida,⁣

Instagram post 2169125642797255035_212296339 My first yoga class in almost ✌🏻years!⁣
⁣
Woke up early, had a cup of decaf, took Koba on a cool walk around the neighborhood, and then walked to @lululemon for their free Sunday morning yoga class. It was humbling to say the least.⁣
⁣
The sounds of the singing bowl while in savasana reminded me of my beloved classes with @lisaweberyoga and then strolling through the monthly farmer’s market afterwards... for a brief moment, I felt at home.

Instagram post 2168509648563100656_212296339 life update 〰️⁣
⁣
We’ve been temporarily out of our (rental) house since October 14 because the floors needed to be replaced. Nick’s been traveling a lot for work lately and Koba and I traveled to Colorado only to return to staying in an @airbnb for an unknown amount of time (of course a two week project is now looking closer to 4-5 weeks).⁣
⁣
We could be moving out of state soon, but that’s up in the air, too. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Needless to say, nothing really feels settled. Even though our house is completely gutted, most of our things are difficult to access, and I’m living out of my suitcase, Nick and I are oddly enough enjoying this AirBNB (appropriately named The Tree House) more than our home.⁣
⁣
While it is no bigger than a shoe box with a pint sized kitchen, we *feel better* here. Nestled in Old Hyde Park, I can walk the 3 blocks to my favorite local coffee shop for an iced oat milk matcha latte and window shop at @lululemon. Unlike the busy suburb in which we live, people are constantly outside walking their dogs, jogging, playing with their kids at the park, chatting with friends by the fountain. These little things all bring me a silly amount of joy.⁣
⁣
It’s often during times of change and uncertainty that I recognize the important things — the shit that matters. ⁣
⁣
I recognize my ability to be flexible when I am a homebody at heart. I recognize my longing for community and that small town, local vibe. I am grateful for my jobs that allow me to work from literally anywhere, and I feel really lucky to have Nick and Koba by my side. One day, sooner than later, we will look back and laugh at these Florida memories. 🌴⁣
