Nutrition Nut Gets A Makeover!

March 2, 2015 by Hillary 11 Comments

Good morning, friends – happy Monday!

Do you notice anything different around these parts this morning!? Nutrition Nut got a makeover! What do y’all think?

I thought I would have the new look completed to share with you all last week, but I got ahead myself. I should have known how picky I am; hence the reason why the design process took a bit longer than I expected – but well worth it, in my opinion.

The blog has undergone a handful of looks in its five plus years. I can’t recall when it had its last facelift, meaning it was well overdo for a cleansing facial, if you will. I pampered both the back and front of the blog.

Back of the House

I started with the “back of the blog” – all that techy stuff you fortunately can’t see nor have to deal with. After a few decent years using Bluehost to host my website, I took the plunge and migrated my site to a new home at AcceleratedWP (affiliate link). While it comes with a price, the support I have received from AWP in the past couple of months is top notch; I am confident the five plus years of Nutrition Nut content is in safe hands.

Front of the House

Next up, the fun part: the front of the house!

Way back when – within my first year of blogging – I purchased the Thesis Theme, which has since been the core design framework of Nutrition Nut. In 2009/2010, Thesis Theme seemed to be the ultimate blogging platform. As with anything, newer and better was hitting the marketplace not before long – sleeker designs with higher functioning themes – and it has taken me a post or two (hundred) to catch up.

Her Fresh Look

I hired Julie at Deluxe Designs to help me with the job. Julie doesn’t work with Thesis, so I was required, at my free will, to migrate to the Genesis Framework (I chose the Foodie “child theme”) in order to utilize her skillful design work. Luckily for me, Julie migrated Nutrition Nut from one theme to other seamlessly; I didn’t have to worry about a thing.

My vision for Nutrition Nut’s new look was “simple, sophisticated, and classy… yet inviting.” I kept my core colors (tangerine + coral with a pop of teal) that have been with me since the early days, while simplifying – less is more! If you don’t know by now, I am a minimalist by nature.

Julie and I played back and forth with a new header design, but I ultimately decided to update what has been the icon of Nutrition Nut for the past few years. According to Julie, the original fonts were “so 2011”!

I am very excited about Nutrition Nut’s matured look and functionality. If you are in the market for design work, I highly recommend Julie (boy, is she patient!).

New Health Coaching Website

Aside from the beautiful job that Julie did, I am probably most excited to share my new hub for my Health Coaching services.

You can either click the Health Coaching tab in the menu bar, or the lovely Health Coaching button to be escorted to my new website dedicated to my coaching practice. Let’s chat during your complimentary initial health consultation.

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
