My Approach to Healthy Traveling

Next Sunday, I am going somewhere I have never been before (isn’t that always fun!?). I am headed to North Carolina for work. I’ll be in the Asheville area for a full week, and I am pretty darn excited.

If you have any recommendations for good eats, please share!

NC

I’ll be living out of a hotel for five nights; so, naturally, being the health nut that I am, I’ve already thought about how this will “throw off” my normal, safe, comfortable daily healthy lifestyle.

My week in NC is going to be a busy one, with long days orientating new employees about the wellness program at the brewery. I imagine that I will get plenty of steps in walking around the facility, but when I think of travel (whether for work or for leisure), the health nut in me thinks of two things: 1) food and 2) fitness.

What will I eat? I’ll have to eat out all week. When will I be able to exercise? Is there a gym at the hotel?

Who else thinks like this?

While I don’t want to throw my healthful lifestyle out the window for six days, I do want to experience the culture (i.e. eat Southern food) and enjoy this unique opportunity. Here are a few ways that I plan to sustain my healthy habits while not making my personal fitness and food choices be the focus of my travel:

– Walk as much as possible (wear my pedometer)

– Attend 1-2 yoga classes at the brewery or downtown Asheville

– Use the hotel gym a few times for quick HIIT/interval workouts

5 No Equipment Travel Workouts

– Prepare my own breakfasts and most snacks

Barney Butter recently sent me samples of their newest and fanciest almond butters, which will most definitely be traveling in my carry-on.

When in NC, I’ll have access to a co-op where I will stock my hotel mini fridge with apples, bananas, and carrots to pair with these flavorful almond butter packets. Plus, I foresee making oatmeal with nut butter in the morning… and dark chocolate with the vanilla/espresso flavor, well that is what I call a jet lag pick-me-up.

early eats.

July 7, 2011 by Hillary 11 Comments

It was an early morning for me today. 6:00am early. This no sleeping due the heat is catching up to me. Not only is it frustrating, but I can feel the lack of deep sleep physically. So, up at 6:00am it was.

OIAJ – yes please!

I did not enjoy this jar of almond butter, but the petite container was perfect for OIAJ.

003-1

Almond Apricot OIAJ
  • 1/2 c. water + 1/4 c. unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/4 c. oatbran
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 T unsweetened coconut
  • cinnamon, flax
  • 3 dried apricots, chopped
  • remaining Barney Butter, ~1 T

012-1

Love the flax fluff!!

I left for the WREC less than 12 hours since my intense cycling workout there yesterday. My body would have much preferred to wait another 8-10 hours, but I’m planning to go to the Thursday Night Market; so, I squeezed my 2 easy miles in early (+ 1 mile walking and 15-minutes strength training).

Then to Trader’s it was for two bags of groceries. I’m waiting for the farmers’ market tonight for produce – peaches & berries!

021-1

Not surprising, at 9:30am I was struggling to keep my eyes open. I made an extra large Ball jar of iced (decaf) coffee and did my blogging for the day morning. Yesterday, I had an extremely frustrating afternoon with Windows Live Writer. After several hours, I managed to “clean up” my pages and there aren’t any major coding catastrophes. Though, WLW is still running slow.

Making today a productive work day as I have company coming this weekend :)

Until later… have a good day!

If you could only eat one type of nut butter, what would it be?

one of those days.

June 22, 2011 by Hillary 13 Comments

Hey hey. Hope you had a lovely Waffle/Workout Wednesday… whichever you prefer.

Today was one of those days. One in which my morning bowl of creamy, oaty goodness was the highlight of my entire day.

I get excited over oatmeal easily, and today I was extra enthused because I tried a new-to-me hot cereal and almond butter. Hot cereal, fresh berries… the ideal way to start any day.

1/3 c. Arrowhead Mills Organic 4 Grain + Flax hot cereal, 1/2 banana, 1/2 T chia, vanilla

topped with 1/2 nectarine, raspberries, scoop of crunchy Barney Butter

I loved the cereal, but I did not love the almond butter. I’ve never purchased BB before, but it was on sale and I had a coupon, so I added it to my basket. I’ve realized – as a nut butter connoisseur – that I don’t care for nut butters with added sugar. It’s not that they’re necessarily too sweet, it’s the texture and consistency that is notably different. Anyone agree?

Though today was a productive one, I didn’t get to my scheduled speed workout – uh oh. I want to keep on track with my SmartCoach training plan, but the grey skies weren’t motivating me to power out 7-minute miles today. I think I may actually be missing the Chico sunshine.

Some Workout Wednesday, I’m going to give this kettlebell yoga workout a swing! My two new favorites in one – yes please!

I already know tomorrow will be a better day! :)

Toodles,

HP

- moved clear across the country to a new state for the second time
- hopped from one AirBNB to the next for 6 weeks while looking for a house to call home
- made new friends, virtually & IRL
- binge watched more TV shows than I can recall
- leveled up as an entrepreneur: hitting milestones with my virtual assistant and @beautycounter businesses
- voted for a new president
- ascended new trails and explored alpine lakes of the Pacific Northwest
- adapted: to Zoom holidays, takeout, and masked faces becoming the (temporary) norm

This challenging year was all about appreciating the little things while living through some really BIG things. 2020 had more than a few lessons to teach us all. Through a pandemic, pivotal change in presidency, and loud cry for human rights, I see very clearly how privileged I am. It was the year to let go of plans and lean in to a new perspective.

After all, hindsight is ②⓪②⓪.

Best thing about 2020... for me, it’s been relationships - virtual and IRL.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
One of the goals that I set for 2020 was to make one new local friend in Seattle (seriously something I wrote down as I began the new year moving across the country). While I’m happy to say that I did so (during a pandemic), I feel fortunate for the virtual friendships that developed, too.⁣⁣

Wendy and I met here on IG, and what started as a business relationship and accountability partner has turned into a special bond that transcends any walkie-talkie or social media app. This creative spirit has not only inspired me to get after it and dream bigger as an entrepreneur, but in the same way has encouraged me to honor rest and play: whether it’s giving each other kudos on Strava for tackling a run, building badass business plans and packages, or simply holding space to share the wins and the many woes, personally and professionally, of a memorable year. Having Wendy in my corner has led to some serious momentum and a sense of consistent community.⁣⁣
