Pizza for the Parents

I know it isn’t Friday, but pizza and beer were on the menu tonight.

The beer traveled all the way from Minnesota, courtesy of my aunt + uncle.

… while the pizza featured local chevre cheese and a freshly-made crust from a [Bay Area] farmers’ market.

All in all: local basil pesto, caramelized onion + mushrooms, chevre + parm

 

plus a harvest salad of organic lettuce, apple, pear, feta, dried cranberries, toasted walnuts, olive oil + balsamic.

Side Note: I am [used to be?] a mushroom-hater. There are a million other things I could have topped the pizza with, but I’m trying to acquire a taste for mushrooms. Mushrooms seem like something a foodie should like. I gobbled up my pizza no problem; I guess they’re growing on me.

I have plans to go for a run again in the a.m… hope my knee cooperates. Are y’all getting excited for Thanksgiving? I’m ready to get my bake on!

Beerbuzz

If you asked me a few weeks ago what I’d be up to today, I would have told you I’d be in San Francisco for the 2nd Annual Foodbuzz Festival.

Well, if you are one the few hundred foodies that made your way to the epicenter of Foodbuzz – the food blogging community’s sponsor – you will not find me there. The penciled letters in my lime green planner are now barely readable under the frustrated eraser marks.

I don’t have an excellent excuse as to why I am not there. Actually… I don’t need an excuse for not seizing the opportunity to participate in an epic weekend including each.and.every.one of my passions alongside the most incredible and inspiring women… but, obviously there is a reason, or two… or three, behind me not travelling the < 4-hour drive to San Francisco this weekend:

1. Honestly, the whole Foodbuzz Festival planning was rather overwhelming to me. I don’t know if it was just me, but it seemed that the information about the festival was released real late in the game. I had just returned home from San Francisco from running the NWM, and suddenly my inbox was bombarded with buzz about the festival. Now I had to figure out the logistics of traveling to the heart of SF all over again!? =/

2. Have I mentioned that I’m unemployed [minus the “pennies” I earn from Foodbuzz each month]? If you know how a jobless college kid can travel to Frisco, stay in the fancier hotels in Union Square, wine and dine like they are the Editor in Chief of Gourmet Magazine, and still have enough money on their debit card to make the return trip to their pitiful apartment, let me know. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not an easy puzzle.

3. Though I love blogging more than anything a lot of things, and would rather spend my time writing about my passions than listening to a lecture from a teacher who admits they don’t want to be there, being a college student is an obligation I agreed to take upon myself. Unfortunately, my professors didn’t plan for Foodbuzz Fest in their syllabi, so instead of exploring the edible exhibits of SF, I’ll be studying for another food science exam.

I apologize for the blatant sarcasm; perhaps I am a bit bitter about the fact that I’m not at the festival when I could be if I had suffered through the e.mail frenzy and let go of a few more of my precious dollars. As much as I try not to let the minuscule number in my bank account dictate how I live my life, and act as an annoying obstacle in grasping once in a lifetime opportunities, I’ve realized we can not do it all. Sometimes all we can do is appreciate what we do have, and what we are able to do. I’ve been fortunate to see and do quite a bit in my young life; so, while I am bummed that I’m not buzzin’ around with Ashley, Tina, and Mama Pea this weekend, I do have some cold pumpkin ales in my fridge to get my own buzz on ;)

What I’ve learned while reflecting on this unfortunate situation:

1. I’ll need to steer away from my regular blog reading and twittering this weekend to prevent turning green with envy.

2. I need a j.o.b. [Know of anyone needing an expert chocolate taste tester!?]

3. Third time’s year’s the charm! Foodbuzz 2011, I will be there.

4. I like beer.

On a Roll

The second day of October kept the good vibes of yesterday alive. The blue October skies say it all.

I enjoyed sleeping in this morning and getting woken up by my MOM :) Because we both wanted to get outside and enjoy the lovely fall day, we decided to leave the waffle iron for tomorrow; instead, I made a cool, creamy concoction in my new blender for breakfast in a jiffy.

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1 c. almond milk
  • 1/2 c. organic pumpkin
  • 2 T flax
  • 1 T agave – I’d suggest using less
  • pinch of cinnamon

Top each with 1/4 tsp. coconut + 1 T toasted pecans.

Serves 2.

Neither my mom nor I finished our serving, as the smoothie was surprisingly rich. However, the not-so-sweet Pepita Pecan Pumpkin Muffin balanced out the meal quite nicely.

We did our best not to let the morning get away from us, so we scurried on downtown to the market and filled our basket to the brim with produce.

We shared a ginger tofu wrap accompanied by a whole wheat tortilla, brown rice, avo, fresh veggies, and miso dressing… plus a side of sea salted edamame. Fresh – yes!

Oh, and of course tea was to be had: ginger peach [unsweetened] – mmmm!

Our food-filled day continued on as we made our way to Trader Joe’s. Again, we loaded our cart with a lot of healthful eats – some staples, as well as a few new finds.

It was a hair past 5 o’clock by the time we unloaded at home, which meant a refreshing spirit was to be had before the cooking got under way. There was a solo Blue Moon beer that had been hiding out in the back of the fridge for far too long – like May! – so, I pop off the top and stuck a fork orange in it!

Dinner was scrumptious, as it always turns out to be when I dine with my mom.

  • Mixed Greens, HumCo Tomato, Peppers, Scallions and a French vinaigrette
  • Whole Wheat Pasta tossed with Olive Oil, Garlic, Arugula, Green Beans, Lavender Chevre, Toasted Walnuts & Fresh Pepper

Coffee ice cream was the ultimate way to cap the tasty day.

 

I’m tired, sticky, and a bit stressed about the schoolwork that’s to be done. There’s a lot of excitement coming to NN on the Run in the near future though, so stay tuned!

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods of time being worse than others. 

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of pandemic. 

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease. 

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer 

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the parasympathetic nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste. 

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend! 

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view! 

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza! 

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
