Friday Feature | In It for the Long Run

June 26, 2015 by Hillary 11 Comments

Hello there and Happy Friday!

Remember that blog series I created way back when where a fellow blogger and I interview each other to then share on our blogs? Yep, that’s it — Friday Feature!

Today I am featuring the spitfire Georgie of In It for the Long Run; a newer blog in my weekly reads, In It for the Long Run is full of colorful plant-based recipes and raw honesty about body peace and balance (and running!). I’ve definitely enjoyed digging through Georgie’s inspirational recipe archives. She is one creative cat in the kitch. Plus, she is a smart cookie when in comes to social media, and she shares her tips and tricks for improving her brand on the web. A fellow runner, veggie, and avocado aficionado — this gal and I have more than a few things in common.

I’m Georgie. To a stranger, I’d describe myself as a goofy 20-something with an insatiable appetite to make stuff. My passions happen to include the internet, food, running, photography, design and making people happy — which means my blog is pretty much the perfect storm of everything I enjoy.

Q & A with Georgie Morley | In It for the Long Run

1. What do you love most about blogging? What’s most rewarding? Challenging?

Hmm, I don’t want this to come off as super cliché, but I love all the people I’ve met through blogging. Before I invested time in growing my community, blogging wasn’t nearly as fun or rewarding. I also love photographing and editing recipes as well as writing posts, especially when I’ve got a lot to get off my chest. The hardest part of blogging is staying on top of my schedule and being consistent. By far the most rewarding aspect is seeing someone make one of my recipes or thank me for a piece of advice. Seriously. That’s literally the best compliment in the world.

2. If we were to open your fridge right now, what would we find?

FRUIT! I’m a bit of a fruit bat and the summer means I go HAM on strawberries. You’ll also find some Greek yogurt, overnight oats, eggs, zucchini waiting to be spiralized, a lil’ goat cheese, tons of arugula – I mean like TONS of arugula – almond and coconut milk, and of course a couple Bai.

3. What does a typical week of exercise look like for you? Are you a cardio queen or strength training machine? Are you training for anything?

Lately, a typical week looks like a whole lot of running because I’m currently training for my 3rd 1/2 marathon. That means a speed run, some hills, some easy runs, and a nice long run on the weekend. However, over the winter, I really got into strength training and incorporating more HIIT into my routine. If I get bored with my usual workouts, sometimes I’ll try out a couple of different classes just to keep it interesting.

4. What dish would you bring to a summer potluck?

Either a fresh fruit salad, and I’m not talking about any weak honeydew melon crap, I mean seasonal fruits like strawberries, raspberries, and watermelon. Or I’d bring some nice chunky guac with tortilla chips because what kind of party doesn’t have a good guac?

toast

Georgie also likes to put strawberries & avocado on toast – yum!

5. Five summer must-haves, and go…

I’m a no-frills kinda gal, so I keep it pretty basic. In the summer, I definitely rely on my Rainbow sandals I’ve had since my freshman year of high school; a pair of sweet shades; sunscreen if I’m not dumb enough to forget; an emergency s’more kit in case I get invited to any last-minute bonfires (that’s not a joke, it’s in my car); and I’ve been loving my S’well water bottle because it keeps my water ice cold forever. Warm water is a deal breaker.

MintGingerLemonade

I think Georgie’s (low sugar) Mint Ginger Lemonade may need to be one of my summer must-haves!

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
