Tuesday Tidbits | 4.16.13

April 16, 2013 by Hillary 5 Comments

1. My heart is heavy and my head confused. I don’t understand yesterday’s tragic event; it’s difficult to grasp the reality that one of the grandest athletic events in the world was halted in a fatal catastrophe. Rather than point fingers of disgust, I’d rather acknowledge the heroes and heroines in yesterday’s wake. Love >> Boston.

2. Tomorrow marks my one year anniversary at my first “big girl” job. Time flies and life.is.good.

3. I devoured the entire batch of almond meal banana coconut muffins in eight consecutive days. As soon as I find myself with a few ferociously sweet, ripe bananas, I am whipping up another batch.

4. Have you checked out my Albion Fit GIVEAWAY!? A Love Racer Tank in spring-y sea foam could be yours! {& BTW, the post had been updated to include a $15 off discount code}

5. With Boston laying heavy on my heart, Aubrey’s announcement restored missing love and joy — so happy for her!!

6. I am hooked on thick, creamy, coconut-y, vibrant green smoothies. Recipe to follow.

IMG 1470

7. Encouragement and improvement — two wonderful things that I have experienced at the box recently, despite an injured knee.

8. Strawberry season is here — hooray! I have welcomed them to crash my salads and even gave them a swim in melted {Easter bunny} dark chocolate.

9. I am more than ready for a mother-daughter weekend to ensue come Friday at five. I know Mom won’t let me get away without sunscreen this weekend. Spring is in full swing!

10. How incredibly awesome is my old gym with this iPad above the scale? I miss it… and intense HIIT treadmill workouts.

Have a great rest of your week :)

Summer’s Arrived with Sizzle ‘n’ Spice

May 20, 2010 by Hillary 8 Comments

Hi! Happy Fri… I mean Thursday! Since it’s summer and all, my days are twisted up. Yes… summer! I had my final final at the early hour of 8:ooam today, and now I am officially done with my 3rd year of college – 2 mas anos! I’m really glad to have another semester behind me, as it was the roughest yet in many ways. I am happy the school year ended when it did because I’m tired of writing about this exam, and that exam… and I never want to write the evil word “O. Chem” again. I can imagine ya’ll are a bit tired of reading about my stagnant life as a student too. It’s time we add some spice up in here!

I’d say these steel cut oats added some sexy spice to my morning! My second attempt at steel cut left no room for complaints… each chewy spoonful was creamy, nutty and 100% hearty.

009

  • 1 cup H20
  • 1/3 c. [quick cook] steel cut oats
  • 1/2T ground flax
  • cinnamon
  • 1/2 itty bitty banana
  • 2 organic strawberries
  • 1T toasted pecans
  • 1 tsp. honey

After a low-energy 60 minutes at the gym, I couldn’t wait to get home and organize for summer [a.k.a. rid my room of all things school related].

023

Bye bye, O. Chem!

This was the first semester I tried renting books. I have to say I will most definitely be doing this again, seeing as how I wasted a couple Benjamin Franklins on books that were never cracked open – ugh. I found that renting was significantly cheaper than purchasing a book [even used], plus you don’t have to keep them on your shelves to collect dust after you’re done using them… or not using them in my case. Have you rented anything for school before?

Tonight, my two roommates and I went to The Brewery for a celebratory dinner.

030

We dined outside under a canopy of greenery – it was a cool, yet comfortable Spring evening.

035

For me, wood-fired veggie Mexican pizza. It packed a spicy punch with a chipotle cream, peppers and caramelized onion, cilantro and cojita cheese –mmm! Unfortunately, no Pale Ale was enjoyed with my meal – uno mas mes!

Then we scootered across town to scout out a new fro yo joint – thank you GPS. I served myself a hefty portion of chocolate and coffee with dark chocolate chips – surprised? It was a quite lovely Friday Thursday night out with the gals.

Now this is something that is surely adding a bit of spice to my summer! I’m in… I bought a ticket to the Healthy Living Summit 2010. Now I must find a j.o.b. pronto to get myself to Chicago. I am going to do my best to make the dream of a weekend come true. Six months into the blogging world, and my relationship is all or nothing!  Are you attending the conference? I am so anxious to meet so many of my inspirations : )

What do you plan to do to add some sizzle ‘n’ spice to your summer?

Off to bed to rest my head. Ahhh, guess who gets to sleep in manana?

Next Up: GIVEAWAY WINNER announced!

Night, all.

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
I’m sure Koba is wondering why we ever lived in I’m sure Koba is wondering why we ever lived in Florida for two years.
