To Race or to R.I.C.E.

December 17, 2012 by Hillary 14 Comments

I had a race to run yesterday. The Jack Frost 10K.

I registered for the small, local run one month ago.

I was excited to cross “run one race” off my Fall Bucket List.

I was excited about my short ‘n’ sweet training schedule.

I was excited about crossing the finish line.

The problem: I think I was a little too excited.

Not even a full two weeks into my training,

I encountered unfamiliar pain in my right knee.

A simultaneous head cold and joint discomfort lead me to believe I was experiencing a case of overtraining.

The following week, I scaled back on my training and had daily dates with the ice pack as I found my holiday spirit in the Christmas classics on TV.

…but, apparently, that wasn’t enough.

I picked up my race bib Saturday morning.

I knew then, however, I wouldn’t be running the next morning.

I could have masked the inflammation with Ibuprofen, smothered my knee in an Ace bandage, and let the endorphins take care of the rest…

but why!?

As hard as it is for me to not follow through with something, especially a goal I had set (and paid for),

the price I would have paid would not have been worth it after those short 6.2 miles were said and done.

I chose to R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) than to race.

I didn’t want to chance doing more damage to what has already been done.

I want to run twenty six point two someday. I do not want to be a young woman with worn down knees.

And you know what… a leisurely breakfast with a girlfriend is much better than running a race in the cold, cold rain anyway.

This isn’t an official diagnosis, but of high likeliness. Inflammation is evident through my very “squeaky” knee cap and most of the pain lies inside (anterior) my knee.

Despite my “this is the end of the world” attitude regarding my minor injury, life does go on and can be somewhat enjoyable at that. I am considering taking a true break from the box until my knee is 100% (positive thinking!), but that didn’t mean the CrossFit Christmas Party was out of the question.

The price I paid for my ugly Christmas sweater was certainly redeemed as I took home a prize ($25 Lulu gift card — yippee!!) for the cookie contest. Peanut butter and dark chocolate never fail.

From my cozy couch to yours,

Hill on the run

Give me hope…

How did you get through an injury — mentally and physically?

Have you had success with kinesiotaping?

Half #5: The {Smarter} Training Plan

June 17, 2011 by Hillary 10 Comments

Hey hey!! Happy Friday :) I know it isn’t Running Tuesday, but since I haven’t had a spare minute to write up my Week II recap of my Slimmer for Summer Plan, I thought I finally fill y’all in on some changes…

First off, the stats:

Slimmer for Summer Recap: Week 2

  • run > 20 miles  roughly 17-18 miles

additional cardio: 19 minutes jump-roping // 20 minutes StairMaster

  • cycle > 2 x 1 hr. classes 2 classes
  • yoga > 2 x 1 hr. classes 1 class
  • strength train: 60 minutes total (~2-3x) roughly 100+ minutes

It’s hard to believe I only went to one yoga class last week! I could definitely tell a difference in body –my muscles were more stiff and my mind was much too busy. I felt like I got in an adequate amount of cardio (love love cycle!!), and unlike last week, I was all about the strength training during Week 2.

SEE MY DAILYMILE LOG FOR DETAILS

THE CHANGES

I started the Slimmer for Summer Plan on June 1, wanting to have some fitness goals to stick to for the summer. However, this was before I registered for my 5th half-marathon, and before I had plans to travel home (where I’m without a gym membership).

Despite being adamant about following through with things, I’m kicking the Slimmer for Summer plan in the bucket after only finishing 2 of the 4 weeks. I suppose you can call me a quitter.

The reason for this is that my race is just 4 weeks away, so I want to concentrate on my running training for the next month, with supplemental cross-training of course.

For Half #5, I’ve decided to try SmartCoach. This is a great tool, as it’s customizable to your individual lifestyle and running goals.

I will follow the plan to the best of my ability, but I am not going to be super rigid with it as spinning, yoga, and life also have high priority.

Have you used SmartCoach?

* * *

This morning I woke up starving!

  • 1/3 c. steel cut oats
  • 1/2 T chia seeds
  • cinnamon
  • raw walnuts
  • fresh, organic blueberries – YUM!
  • 1/2 tsp. raw sugar
  • splash of 1% milk

This bowl barely did a thing to my hunger, but my light breakfast actually worked out well as it was the right amount of energy to fuel me up for a short run. Oops – that wasn’t in the training plan!

I ran for 32 minutes around town and finished my workout at home with yoga in the yard.

Organic greens growing in the garden – mmm!

Off to lunch with a friend. Catch ya later!

“Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. “Anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.” - Dr. George Papanicolaou

It’s no secret that I suffer from chronic anxiety and panic attacks. Or at least I don’t intend it to be. Because while there can be a lot of shame and embarrassment around both of these, I know I’m not alone in my experiences. While I’ve leaned toward the more anxious side most of life, my bothersome anxiety has steadily increased since my mid-twenties - some periods being worse than others.

It’s not a complete surprise that my mental health has taken a dip during my first full gloomy Seattle winter — in the height of a pandemic.

Here are some ways I have been nurturing my body & mind as I work with a team of practitioners to work on understanding the **root causes** of my panic, and to live with more ease.

» no coffee (not even decaf)

» meditating regularly - I’m using @insighttimer

» gentle movement

» weekly therapy sessions

» attempting cold showers (this is hard for me!): if you’re interested, you can research how this impacts the nervous system

» working with a naturopathic doctor to focus on gut + hormone health

» trying a new Rx - a decision that took years of consideration

» lastly, opening myself up to vulnerable conversations/sharing my story and my experiences in efforts to reduce any shame and connect with others

I am not my anxiety.

Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴 I was expect Leavenworth, WA • Where To Eat🍴

I was expecting all things beer, brats and pretzels in Leavenworth (not really my jam) 🍺🥨🧀, and while there’s plenty of it, I was delighted to find plenty of delicious eats for my “foodie” taste.

We went to all of these 3 places more than once during our quick stay - highly recommend!

☕️ @argonautespressobar: Located at one end of Front Street, this adorable coffee bar has delicious espresso drinks, breakfast items, and the best view!

🥐 @tumwaterbakery: Incredible pastries, avocado toast on artisanal bread that’s a feast for your eyes... and I’m eager to go back and try their wood-fired pizza!

🍜 @yodelinbroth: Literally some of the best food I’ve had (ever!), and that’s saying a lot. I had the Yodelin soup with housemade wild PNW halibut bone coconut curry broth, udon noodles, heaps of veggies and wild salmon - it was nourishing to my core as we ate it outside in 30 degree weather. I even bought some of the broth to recreate this meal at home, yum!

winter wonderland getaway ✔️ We had snow much winter wonderland getaway ✔️

We had snow much fun exploring the picturesque Bavarian town of Leavenworth, WA for a much-needed mid-week getaway to the mountains. 🏔

We stayed in a cozy little cabin @logecamps right on the Wenatchee River (one day I’ll be back to stay at the stunning @phleavenworth), played in Enchantment Park, took a drive to Lake Wenatchee, and discovered some of the best food downtown (I’m saving my food recs for another post).

Nestled between the snow-capped Cascade Mountains with the river running through town, it’s quite magical in the middle of winter. ❄️ I’m already dreaming of heading back for some summer adventures!
