24 Things I Now Know

June 19, 2013 by Hillary 10 Comments

1. Keep calm and call your mom.

2. You don’t have to finish everything you start… this doesn’t mean you failed.

3. Thank your Dad for insisting a spare car key be affixed with duct tape underneath your vehicle.

4. Buy a couch made for afternoon naps.

5. Moms love you to the moon and back, despite whatever wild rocket ship you take them on.

6. A movie that doesn’t interest you is not always a waste of time; learn from it.

7. Eat local. It tastes better.

8. The Swede in me doesn’t do sun tans.

9. I prefer vegetables in my cake, skip the frosting.

10. The name Hillary seems it will always be a nickname magnet.

11. Say “I love you” more.

12. Ice cream: the simpler, the better.

13. Make messes — the clean up is that much more satisfying.

14. All traditions have an expiration date.

15. You don’t always have to run that extra mile.

16. Ask questions.

17. Scratches and scars are inevitable; embrace them.

18. Yoga and meditation are no hocus pocus.

19. Buy the overpriced shoes; you’re worth it.

20. Do not fret the future.

21. A chocolate chip binge won’t kill you.

22. Grandmas have you on their mind at all times.

23. Buy yourself fresh flowers.

24. Endings = beginnings.

Today is, in fact, my twenty fourth birthday. A casual day it’s been, filled with simple pleasures: an early {24-minute} sunrise run, iced coffee, fresh flowers, friendly phone calls, veggie sushi, and homemade vanilla bean ice cream.

Racing to the Redwoods

November 20, 2010 by Hillary 14 Comments

Despite the fact that I haven’t posted since Monday, there is really only one important thing to note: I am HOME.

After one ridiculously busy/stressful school week, I drove 3 rainy hours south to celebrate my friend’s twenty second 1st anniversary of her 21st birthday and run a 5K race with Girls on the Run before traveling for 4 more slow and slushy hours to the enchanting place I call home.

008

Winter is near already here! [Photo courtesy of my car company… don’t you worry.]

Y’all know how anxious I’ve been to get home. I haven’t been in Humboldt since August 10th, which is a longgg time for this homebody. As soon as I walked into my bedroom, I could already tell that it’s going to be hard to leave this place again come next Saturday.

I’m looking forward to a rejuvenating week vacation from my usual routine. However, my planner is already filling up quickly and my to-do [to-bake] list is stretching longer by the day. So after a soothing shower, I got right to checking something very important off my [to-eat] list: sushi!

 018

021

017

My dad & I enjoyed a delectable dinner tonight at our favorite, local Japanese restaurant: Sushi Spot. The usual Dragonfly Roll for me + hot green tea. [I also had a plate of sautéed spinach, broccoli, and zucchini with a honey miso drizzle – love my greens!]

Ahhh… there’s not a lot better in life than a stomach full of sushi with the first fire of the season burning in the woodstove. Well, I’m running on a measly 4 hours of sleep at the moment, so I should probably call it a night; I want to be well-rested for the week ahead.

Here’s what’s on the agenda:
  • Sleeping in Outdoor runs & DanceFit.
  • Baking and more baking.
  • Haircut time – finally!
  • Blog updating + guest posting.
  • Photo organizing.
  • Holiday decorating.
  • A turkey-less Thanksgiving.
  • Studying, quizzing, and projecting – ick.
  • Time with family + friends.

You should expect to be seeing a lot more of NN on the Run in your reader this upcoming week :)

Sweet dreams from rainy, Northern CA.

Tour de Trinidad

July 16, 2010 by Hillary 12 Comments

I went on another beautiful bike ride with my dad today. It was a step up from our previous ride. We rode to the quaint, coastal town of Trinidad. It was a foggy Friday morning here on the North Coast, which meant for a cool ride. The sky wasn’t that gorgeous blue that it was last time around, but instead, its typical whitish-grey.

013

After climbing the hills to Trinidad for its spectacular view of the waves, we were greeted by this:

005

The thick, perspiring fog was smothering the ocean, and it didn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. No whale watching today. We strapped up our helmets again and off we went…

Tour de Trinidad

  • Distance: 33.2 miles
  • Time: 2:41:28
  • Average Speed: 12.3mph
  • Top Speed: 23.5mph

Pre-ride fuel.

001

  • 2/3 c. Nature’s Path Oaty Bites
  • 1/3 c. Nature’s Path Agave Plus Granola
  • 2/3 c. Humboldt Creamery 0% Milk
  • 1/3 c. of our neighbor’s a-mazing blueberries
  • 1/2 banana

I’ve been on a cold cereal kick. Must be this incredibly hot summer weather, hah! ; )

Post-ride fuel.

022

PB & [raspberry] J on organic sprouted wheat flax bread + 1 juicy peach… then there was an apricot and another half of banana. CARBS!

Dinner. I think my Humboldt sushi craving is officially cured.

029

031

032

Mango + cilantro in sushi… who would’ve thought!?

Marathon Training Plan post tomorrow!!

Hope you’ve had a relaxing Friday night : )

Hillary

Question of the Day:

Do you like bike riding? My heart belongs to running, but I have certainly been enjoying giving my body a ‘rest’ with these refreshing rides.

Are you watching the Tour de France? The TV is turned on at the crack of dawn in this household for the month of July just to follow the yellow jersey. My dad owns a bike shop. Enough said.

What’s your style? I am a complete minimalist. I am constantly cleaning out my closet. Everything has a place. I despise clutter. It isn’t necessarily a good thing, but I can’t exactly help it… it runs in my family.

Pure Love

January 18, 2010 by Hillary Leave a Comment

It’s almost that time again…time for my 2 hours of trash TV for the week. You can give me all the crap you want about watching The Bachelor, but it’s one of my guilty pleasures. Before ogling over the stud of a bachelor for the rest of the night, let me inform you about today’s eats.

Lunch = leftovers…a slice of savory pie + 1/2 an apple.

Snacks =

  1. handful of bittersweet chocolate chips + 12 oz. non fat latte
  2. 1/2 cup o% Oikos, 1/2 banana & granola

Dinner = sushi…oh, how I’ll miss you Tempura Roll.

I finally remembered to order my roll with brown rice tonight – nice ‘n’ nutty.

[Insert Chocolove – 65% cocoa- dark chocolate here.]

Ok, that’s it. The show has started and I want to give it my full attention : )

What are your guilty pleasures – TV, food…?

Life's Simple Pleasures

December 23, 2009 by Hillary Leave a Comment

Hi All,

Who’s excited about Santa’s arrival just a day away? Me, Me, Me! Of course it isn’t as exciting as when I was a little kid, but I am certainly looking forward to it. I think one of my favorite traditions that I miss is putting out cookies and carrots for Santa and his reindeer. I placed whatever homemade cookies that hadn’t been eaten yet on the designated “Cookies for Santa” plate along with a cold glass of milk and placed them on top of the woodstove, along with my Christmas wish list of course. Ok, get this…I did this halfway through high school. No, I didn’t still believe in Old Saint Nick, but that’s how much of a stickler I am about tradition : )

Today was rather uneventful, but I did enjoy some of my favorite eats:

Around 3:30pm, I made myself a homemade egg nog latte (with Silk and hand drip decaf coffee). I even topped it off with a dusting of nutmeg. It was a beauty, if I do say so myself.

Check out that thick cloud of foam – mmm!

I may have consumed a couple of cookies with this. Ugh, does anyone else feel like Cookie Monster lately?

Then after shopping for groceries with my dad for tomorrow’s feast, we picked up sushi (yes, again) at Sushi Spot. This place is hard to resist, folks : )

Family Style

***

Tomorrow’s a busy day for me:

– run with Court & gift exchange @ Cafe Brio

– “run” to the bank

– pack for Sonoma County weekend

– cook & clean for company

– dinner @ 6:00pm!

Off to catch some zzz’s,

~ Hillary

Sushi [always hits the] Spot

December 22, 2009 by Hillary Leave a Comment

Hey hey. How’s your Tuesday thus far? I have been crossing off my to-do list left and right.

Lunch at Sushi Spot was scrumptious as always. It was really great to catch-up with my friends Amanda and Jane who I’ve been friends with since 6th and 3rd grade – they’re the type you keep forever : ) For lunch, I had a Tempura Roll (tempura prawn, tempura yam, avocado & spices) and a Sunomono Salad (cucumber, carrot, seaweed, vinegar).

You noticed the fork, didn’t ya? Yes, despite growing up with Japanese food, I am chopstick-challenged : )

Anyway, I’m off to search for recipes for Christmas Eve dinna – times a running out!

Later,

A Mellow Monday

November 23, 2009 by Hillary Leave a Comment

Today was a rather uneventful day here on the homefront. Not a lot to share. I did have a piece of leftover galette for lunch, and managed to capture a decent picture. It was scrumptious!

I can’t visit home without a meal from Sushi Spot – it really has the best sushi rolls in town. So…with a fire crackling in the wood stove, we decided on sushi to go and enjoyed it in the comfort of our warm home.

I ordered the Dragonfly Roll: tempura prawn, avocado, cucumber, carrot, cilantro, macadamia nuts and sweet chili sauce…and edamame, of course!

Looking forward to getting my hair cut tomorrow, researching Thanksgiving dessert recipes (slacker), and hopefully crafting with my mom…

Take care ya’ll!

~ Hillary

This challenging year was all about appreciating the little things while living through some really BIG things. 2020 had more than a few lessons to teach us all. Through a pandemic, pivotal change in presidency, and loud cry for human rights, I see very clearly how privileged I am. It was the year to let go of plans and lean in to a new perspective.

One of the goals that I set for 2020 was to make one new local friend in Seattle (seriously something I wrote down as I began the new year moving across the country). While I’m happy to say that I did so (during a pandemic), I feel fortunate for the virtual friendships that developed, too.⁣⁣
